SOB
I have Power Director 5. I have been working on Family Tree Video for months now. I save the program often because I have some freeze up issues with big PD5 files. (I know I should have re-named each time I saved, but never had any trouble before.)

The file was getting pretty large (34 MB) so I made my final edits and saved it again getting ready to burn a disc. When I tried to load it the next time it shuts PD5 down.

So I contacted support help. Here is what I got.

1st Time They told me that if the media files were not available the program would not work. Well DUH I am not a beginner.

2nd Time They told me to use the import function and load the file that way. Are you kidding me. Import if looking for a media file not a pds file.

3rd Time They told me to make a diag text file and send it to them. I did they suggested that I update my Video Card. How could that make any difference. The program works fine saving and playing new files.

Where do they get these guys?

Each time I made it plan that the problem only involved this one file. I asked them if they could open the file for me. I asked if I could send it to someone to open and fix it. They ignored that question.

So I am asking if anyone has had this problem and know of a possible solution??? I have so many hours involved in this project any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will,

First off - I haven't used PD5 for a long while and I'll only give you some simple suggestions and expect you to do some self-help on this particular self-inflict, ok.

A pds just has two functions.
1. to open PD
2. input into PD all the data for a project.
It means you can amend or tweak a pds if you have the capacity to look and the "courage" to experiment.

Before I go on about opening (script part of) a pds. You are I expect aware that you can click and drag a pds into the PD's Media Library and it will then open the project. Try this out.

Copy the pds project file.
Rename it.
Right click on it
Select > open with
Select > NotePad
or
Choose program
Go find Notepad
ensure you untick "Always use......
Click OK

Right, you will now have to wait an age as the 34mb script loads into Notepad. Your next action is to find another pds (hopefully an earlier saved project file). The aim is to have two notepad text editors open on your PC desktop so you can compare script content especially how the pds is finished off at the end.

You can remove some of the latter end of the script if you work out by reading the script. You may need to compare a third pds if you have to add some script to your project pds because it is a corrupted saved file.

Whatever you do... you need to look, examine and workout.

I'm not going to list actions or look at your pds - far too much hassle for me.

you are aiming to look and play to get your corrupted pds to open. You may need to remove the last lot of work (video etc to get the pds to open. remember you can make numerous copies BUT always work on a copy.

good luck.

Ok thanks for replying. You are the first one that is making any sense. Of course, I have already tried dragging the file. I opened the file with Notepad like you said and I see some things that are different. I understand that it will be trail and error procedure and that I must always work form a copy. My question is: after I edit the file how do I save it. I went to "save as" and the only choice was a .txt file. So, after I make the changes how do I save it as a pds file that I can load into PD5?

Excellent, keep looking. Just click "save" when working in a copy.

Alternatively you have to change the "save as type" to "All files" and then name it with the pds extension.

I realise it's a laborious task resolving this particular issue. Others have had to do it and have been successful, so stick at it. This is part of the learning curve all of us at some stage have had to endure. When you've done it successfully you can come back and help someone in a similar situation.

Success!! Thank you so much.

I now have all my work restored. It was very easy the file was just missing the four lines that all other files have. Copy and Paste and it loads. I was about ready to give up. Thanks again and yes I would love to help.
