What version of Windows are you using - is it 32 or 64 bit?
32 bit operating systems can only address around 3.5 Gb of memory. PowerDirector 12 Build 2420
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit
Dell Studio XPS 7100 AMD Phenom II x6 1035T 2.6Ghz with 8 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card graphics card
Hauppauge Colossus capture card and "Capture" software

How much resources Powerdirector uses at any given time depends on what Powerdirector is doing. Content makes a huge difference in what resources are in use.

It you really want to see your computer resources used up, put 2 hours of 1920x1080 @ 16 Mbps video on the timeline.
Add splits, transitions. throw in a bit of Power Tools functions, add chapters.

Then burn a 50 GB Bluray disk with menu. If your computer can handle all that, you have a good powerful computer.

Just because 64bit OS can give access to more memory to applications, doesn't mean the apps need or will use more memory.

There doesn't seem to be any settings in PD. I'm using Win 8 pro 64bit with only 8GB RAM. PD never uses more than about 3.6GB of it no matter what format or how large the project is. I do 1080p 1.5hr projects mostly.

I am Running 64bit. It would be nice if PD would have a settings to allow temp files to be loaded in memory vs disk etc. I have never seen memory useage above 3.6 GB.

Thanks....
