Making a GIF for Smartphone

First a little description of what I'm trying to do. We were at a waterfall and I took video of it. My wife would now like the waterfall, in motion, as an animated wallpaper in her Moto X smartphone. If I understand how the animated wallpapers work they're basically a GIF.

So, with some research I found this video telling how to make an animated looping GIF for web pages, avatars, Emails, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugkSg7G-6DE

The video explains the process using PowerDirector 11 (my version) to make the basic loop. Then you take this to a free download program Format Factory to convert into a GIF.

Okay so far. I understand how to do this, now for the question. The video doesn't say anything about using it as an animated wallpaper for a smartphone.

Does anyone know if this will work?
When loading the GIF to the smartphone, do you place it in the pictures, video, etc. section of the phone?

Hi Dan05201,

I don’t have Moto X phone.
My phone has a curly wire connected to a handset, and a base with a round disc with finger holes in it that one spins to dial.
Point being that. . . I really shouldn’t be chiming here, other than having a little interest in using PowerDirector to edit video file segments that can be converted into GIF files.

I’m sure you’ve checked the Moto X “user guides”.
I looked and found this entry, though it doesn’t seem to be too “specific” in describing how to do what you are wishing to accomplish.

If you’ve got a GIF file that’s working to your satisfaction, and no one who uses a Moto X phone chimes in here, you might consider gong to this Motorola support site to get your answer.

Thanks for the reply/suggestion Cranston.

This section explains how to set the wallpaper. They have some pre-loaded. The options here are; Gallery, Live Wallpapers, Photos, and Wallpapers. I have done photos and used them for wallpapers before.

That's my problem, I don't know where to put it in the phone. I'm don't know how, or if, a smartphone "sees" a GIF. Doing a Google search I was able to find a way to do it on an Atrix via an app download.

I hadn't thought about trying the Motorola forum. My beady head saw PowerDirector and I came to here like a moth to flame. Thanks for that suggestion.

An update for what I have found, as I understand it.

A GIF will play on a smartphone. It will only play as a picture or video will. This means that none of the apps will be available to use.

If you want to use it as a wallpaper you need to have an app, or be able to write your own program, that will convert it for use as a wallpaper. This will allow all of the apps to be at the top and usable.

Some phones have the wallpaper making app and others don't. You'd have to check your app store.
