How do I correct aspect ratio?

Helping sister with vacation video. The camcorder is an older Samsung miniDV, but she had issues with tape so recorded to SD memory card. What's really odd is the clips are flagged as 3:2 although the resolution is 720x480. PD imports them as 3:2 and look squished. Is there any way to change aspect ratio for each clip? TIA Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

You can double-click a timeline clip, uncheck "maintain aspect ratio." Then resize it in the preview screen. SAVE.

how would I know what size to resize it in the preview? Guessing isn't very accurate. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

GGRussell, you might try to first set the project aspect ratio, (Edit > Aspect Ratio) and then drop the clip in the timeline, if PD incorrectly handles the aspect ratio, right mouse click on the clip in the timeline and Set Clip Attributes > Set Aspect Ratio and this gives you a few choices, maybe one will handle your footage correctly. I've seen PD miss the proper ratio and this can often correct the issue.

720x480 is 3:2. I don't know why it is squished. I normally set the project to 16:9. The preview will have black bars top and bottom, but will produce correctly. __________________________________

720x480 has always imported to every editor I've used as 4:3 and I've never had it squish. Anyway, I have to force it to 4:3 in PD11 to make it look correct. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

It can be squished because NTSC DVDs are almost always 720x480. Note that this frame size is neither a 4:3 nor a 16:9 ratio. There are flags in DVD data that tell the DVD player whether the image encoded into the 720x480 frame should be displayed as 4:3 or 16:9 on the display. If this is not read correctly, you get a squish, whence the need to manually override.

I'll just have to use another editor. I have close to 200 clips and changing each clip would be tedious. What I find odd, this same camcorder records 720x480 to DV tape. As a test, I captured a minute from the tape and I don't get the warning. The file is definitely 720x480. Yet PD doesn't import it squished and Properties state it is 4:3. Go figure LOL

To make it even more confusing, i get a FPS mismatch even though they are both 29.97fps.

Jeff - my files import into PD11 and display squished in PREVIEW. Doesn't matter what I set the project to 4:3 or 16:9.

Maybe tick the button at the bottom that says apply to all video clips.

If the other camera and stills display okay, just drop all the trouble footage in the timeline, do the right mouse click and set the clip attributes to which ever setting alleviates the squish, apply to all, move around and edit. Or you can store them in track 2 if you need to while working in track 1.

This is a GREAT thread.
5 or 6 years ago I owned a JVC camera, (awful), and it came with Cyberlink PD9 which was waaayyy to good for the camera!
I always had a lot of trouble with the aspect.
I shot it in widescreen, but when played on the cyberlink, no matter what I did, it looked even more stretched.
I had trouble playing it on the TVs and making DVDs the aspect ratio was so tricky. Eventually I had to do it on Windows DVD maker!

I'm going to revisit those old .mod .tod videos and see if I can remake them. Lucky I kept the original files!!!
Thanks for all that info, it looks promising.
