PRODUCTION FORMATS

Old topic, but still driving me nuts. I am experimenting with various production formats
My source is a video converted from an 8mm camcorder file = "Movie Clip (.mpg)",
Video 720 x 480
Data rate 8300kbps,
Total bit rate 9836kbps
Frame rate 29fps,
Audio 1536kbps 2channel 48khz

I have tried MP4, AVCHD, WMV, AVI trying to discover which gives me the smallest file, without losing resolution. I find that if I produce at a bit rate below original I lose stuff, and if I go higher than usual files get bigger and smoother. If I try to duplicate specs of source video it gets worse. So far I've found AVI to be best.

What I don't understand is how the video gets smoother when I add resolution, but it does!

My goal is to have separate files of various events in digital format and have opportunity to recombine smaller videos into longer production or make a DVD. What do the experienced users our there suggest?

When I converted my old VHS tapes I used MPEG 2 720x480. That is what they captured in, so I left it that way. Not the smallest format and MPEG 4 seems to give just as good results and a much smaller file size. You can improve it a little by adding enhancements, but be prepared for a very long production time. __________________________________

Thank you for reply. It makes sense to me, but I thought results were not as good as original. If you use mp4, what settings do you use?
What I have recently discovered is that if I "Produce" in higher bit rate formats, the results show smoothing of jagged edges on sides of moving objects. But the files get very big.
Does that make any sense?
