I know I can insert the adjusted audio file into another track and mute the original audio which is part of the video, but this way if I need to do further editing, I have to do twice as much work, splitting and moving them each, as to where if it's the audio track that comes together with video is part of it and is easier to edit together as one. can the original audio file of the video be replaced?

Yes. You can right-click the original audio track and UNLINK VIDEO AND AUDIO.
Click/drag the audio track to another level, to move it out of the way.

Then move your replacement track into the now vacant original audio location.
Use <cntrl/left click> to select both the video and audio tracks.
Right-click and LINK VIDEO AND AUDIO.

is there a way to unlink audio and video in a BUNCH of selected clips on the same track? I don't see the unlink option when I have more than one selected, it's greyed out
