Single Frame advance in Preview window for editing

I am trying to edit video files (.flv, .wmv, .mpg), using Frame Step to find the right frame at which to cut out my desired clip. However, when I Frame Step through the movie, the preview image only changes every 2 seconds. The replay is smooth (at the appropriate 25 fps), but it is difficult for me to identify the right frame at which to cut if the display changes only every 50 frames (2 sec), and using the pause only returns me to one of those every-2-sec frames.
I have not been able to find an option or control to allow the Frame Step to display the new frame with every advance, but this seems so fundamental, that I must be missing something.

Hi PeterGuthrie,

Do you have your Advance Settings set like this?

With this setting, my fame advance seem to work fine in providing frame by frame advancements.

Yes, I do have it set like that, but your assurance that it should work that way made me think of another possible issue - the input file format. I have found that when I import a .wma file, the frame advance seems to work fine. When I import a .flv file, the frame advance is in 2-second steps.
So, a simple workaround is to make generous cuts in the .flv file, produce as a .wma file. and then do the final editing on the .wma file.
I would still like to hear if anyone else has run into this issue with .flv files. One of the reasons I have purchased PowerDirector is that it will import .flv files (my other video editors include products from Magix, Adobe, and ULead), none of which import .flv files. Too many of my .flv files are corrupted to always be able to use a format conversion utility.
Oh well - I have a workaround, which is good enough for me.

Hi Peter -

Frame advance works in the same way for .FLVs as for any other video format.

There may be something about your files that is causing them to function in that way. What are the properties? particularly the frame rate?

Just tested a couple - 25fps & 12fps & they each responded as expected, advancing frame by frame.

Hi PeterGuthrie,
When I want to advance or go back a frame, I prefer to use the keyboard controls. The response to a mouse click is not always as effective as one would want.

Keyboard control:
Advance one frame, "." (the full stop key).
Back one frame, "," (the comma key).

Observing the counter going up or down will give you precise positional placement of the track slider and use of the Split control action.
