Sorry, I was reading that as a problem with green screen. Not a problem with seeing a totally green screen when you preview a video. It must just be too early !

Contact your computer manufacturer and get them to give you a new download. Did you get any discs with the computer; it might be there.

Please tell us a little more about what you are trying to do when you get the green screen. Are you simply doing an edit of the video or ???

What has MS said about your computer and what kind of issues you are having with Movie Maker. Suggestions: Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed (or repaired) and make sure that you have msxml 4 (or later) installed.

You said you had all the codecs; does that mean you have the latest version of Quicktime installed? I'll assume that it is.

You said you updated the video card/chip drivers. Try uninstalling them and then re-installing them. What you have may be corrupted.

What kind of AVI file? AVI could be a lot of different things. Where did you get it? Can you cut about 3 or 4 seconds of that file and post it so we can try it? Is the video a DivX program? You may need DivX installed. http://www.divx.com/en/software/download/start

I don't know if your version is compatible with Windows 8.

-No disks and they have already said no... i just asked...
-I simply loaded the file and dropped it in the timeline then i wanted to preview it and i got a green preview screen.
-My computer wasn't the problem, it was a problem with movie maker as found after a 6 hour remote desktop with an engineer.
-I have the latest version of directX already.
-I have the latest msxml version, the installer told me.
-Yes, i have quicktime 7.7.3
-I said i have the latest versions. And if they where corrupted, i think i would have known about it from playing battlefield 3. But from uninstalling and re-installing nothing was improved.
-It's a fraps AVI file output. I have double checked and it has been confirmed working by other people.
-If my version is not compatible with windows 8, why was it pre-installed on my laptop? and even confirmed working find by HP?

I just went to the hp site and looked for drivers and software for your computer. There are downloads for each of the bundled software packages. Yiouare correct that the version you have is W8 compatible.

You may want to download it again. This is the US site; the location for your location may be different:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-111008-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4132&product=5312241&sw_lang=

Please note that most of the software that comes with a new computer are OEM (crippled and castrated) versions of the full commercial products. perhaps your version does not handle the file you are working with.

Have you tried a different (standard) type video; perhaps a wmv (non-fraps) or mpg2. You can google for examples.

Try to change video driver setting
(you can change only for PD10) and set to only one monitor, only one GPU.
For my NVidia solution work fine.

It was painful to read that. I would recommend to proof read what you write. I really don't mind interne slang because i understand it but that was just a horrible mess of... idk.

But let me state this now; I have Intel HD Graphics 4000 and not a Nvidia card. Please check the first post under the title "System info" to find a link to it.

Incorrect. Check the laptop that is against my laptop model; under my model there is no download available.

Further more, the file type is supported; I am able to load the file into the content/media window... i man the one above the timeline where you load files to... and i am able to view the file, as well as play it in the preview screen.
However it is when i drag the file to the timeline and try to view it i get a green preview screen.

Jack, don't get thrown off track.

I looked at your posted computer specs and saw an HP Pavillion g6 laptop. Do you know how many versions of the g6 there are? I told you I looked at the US site and that you should look at the UK site for more information. What is the full model number of your laptop? I'm not sure why you would get the OEM software and then later not be able to redownload it

BY the way, your graphics drivers are NOT up to date. There is one from Dec 18, 2012
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng

What is the file type? As I told you, there are many different types of AVI video files. Why are you reluctant to answer the questions? Do you want some help to try to find the answers?

What do you mean by "I man the one above the timeline" Have you tried any of the "other" preview options?

Lighten up with someone trying to help. It is apparent that English is not the person's first language.

HP Pavilion g6-2210sa.
The file type is a AVI video file which is a FRAPS output. Read the first post. -_-

Blue- The Box above the timeline.
Green- The Fraps .AVI file. Which can be played in the preview screen next to it. No problem.
Yellow- Adding it to the timeline...
Red cross- Clicking or selecting the video project, it shows up in preview screen.
Red Circle- Click play and green preview screen... well, it's green to me, but black in the picture.
-As for other preview options... i tried all the ones below the preview screen but no luck.

But still, he can understand enough to have a post of some sense... well barely.
Yet still, GPU's are still relevant in this topic so we are still on track.

Isn't the fraps capture a wmv file? What are the properties?

It would still be a big help if you uploaded a few seconds of the video for us to play with. If everyone has the same issue, then we'll know that the file for some reason is not supported. If we can get it to preview, then we will know it is something on your computer .

I am mortified for my poor English ... but, I am trying to tell my personal experience.
After a HD upload to Youtube, same video is passed to catalog, without ask from me.
The message before having video in the catalog is related to using of HD rendering and the need for PD to enable shadowing ...
Sorry again but in the italian version translate the setting and the software message back to english is not easy.
The result was the green screen in preview section and in multimedia preview.
NOTE only for preview in HD! Preview on low res. continued to operate. Preview to multimedia still on green screen.
Tryed to reinstall and update sw. without result... but, in another user profile the problem is not present ...
Mhhm ... in the affected user profile tryed to reset all to standard setting. No result.
Reinitialized user profile from 0, and the problem disappear .... until import of HD video pubblished before !!
Then I have green screen again ...
At this point I'm tryed to change some setting in the advanced video driver setting windows, until problem is solved.
Sorry again if someone do not understand what I write, but English is not my native language ...
I would like you tried to write for me the recipe for "spaghetti alla bolognese" in Italian

No, fraps has always been .AVI. The properties where listed in the first post, but here they are again:
848x480 (480p)
Data rate 144852kbps
Total bitrate 146388kbps
Frame rate 29
audio bit rate 1536kbps
audio channels 2
Audio sample rate 48kHz

I've also recorded a quick one.
Note- Due to size, I'll uploading to separate site... (only 3 seconds and 15mb -_- (Fraps has bad compression lol))

Here are two links, pick which ever...
http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/387892/javaw-2013-01-28-23-27-22-82-avi.html
http://depositfiles.com/files/93p7g6hk5
(If neither work, just say what site and I'll pop it on for you)

Ah well that made a little more sense... lol, sorry about earlier, i just was having a really hard time understanding.
hmm... Odd... unless it might just be a problem with the videos? i mean, I'm not even trying a HD video, I'm using a 480p video... could it be file compression?
[Post New]
Could be ... but before reinitialize the user profile I have also tryed to install last version of codec pack ... without result.
My opinion is that import/enabling of some kind of video (codec?) write on user profile (at the registry level) something of wrong.
But ... remind my strange solution. Sorry but at the moment I do not have in my hand the affected PC, only from wednesday I can try to post some screenshoot. For now, goodnight (here is one o clock), and good luck

Jack, Perhaps I'm missing something but it took me only a few minutes to find this:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4132&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5322141#N809

gundam: Most reasonable people would not have trouble understanding at least part of your suggestion. Yes, shadowing has an affect on the preview window. You are saying that you have to change the user settings after you add HD video or you also get the green screen also.

I understand that you are trying to change the driver settings to see if that will permanently cure the problem. Please tell us what you do change to fix the problem.

Jack, until you do upload a few seconds of the video, I'm sure I can't do more to help.

That is the right page but, I've checked and people have said that it doesn't work correctly, in the sense it doesn't activate. I'd rather hold off until we are sure that is one of the final possible solutions.

I have uploaded a few seconds of video!! Why don't you check the post before... before... i put 2 links to different download locations, because the upload doesn't work. But because you don't read, here it is again:
