How to combine / re-join clips together? (Resolved)

I'm not sure if I'm using the right terminology here for what I want to do, so I'll try explaining it and see if anyone with more skill than me can put the right words on it!

OK, so I've got a nice long clip and I'm fiddling about trying to figure out where best to edit it, so I try a few things and end up with several splits throughout the clip. In the end I just take a bit off the beginning and end, leaving the middle intact. But now I've got several unnecessary splits in the middle, and I'd like to get rid of them because they're not proper cuts - it's really the same original footage in the middle.

Is there a way to combine or join the now separate bits back together, as they were before I split them? Visually it would help me see on the timeline where the 'real' changes are. I know it won't make any difference to the final Produced file; it's more for ease while editing.

Thanks for your help!

The editing PD does is non distructive, that is your original clips are not altered in any way.

If you make cuts, splits add things and take things away, when you get to the final production phase, wether that be a disc or a file, only then will your final work be rendered as you intended it, the bits not wanted won't make it into production and those splits you have provided there are on the time time in the order you wanted them, then that's how it will be.

Suggest you take a bit of time to look at Dafydd tutorials at the head of the forum, he spent a lot of time doing them just for YOU

I believe the combine function is gone, but if you highlight the clips and right click on them, in the context menu you will see 'Group Objects'. Choose it. You will still see the split, but the clips will act as one. That is really not necessary unless it just eases your editing. The split will not show in the produced video, of course. __________________________________

Thanks djmorgan and Jaime-esque. Dafydd's tutorials are very helpful, an excellent resource. It's interesting to know that there once was a combine clips function, as I feel quite new to PDR. I like how the Group Objects function highlights the whole group when playing the clip, no matter how many splits there are.

After a bit of playing around I accidentally discovered I could achieve the same end result in a different way: by clicking the right hand edge of the first clip, dragging it over the top of the unnecessary splits to the end of the clips I wanted to combine, and then choosing 'Overwrite'. It ends up presenting as one clip on the timeline instead of several. Ah, lovely!

Thanks again for your help! Kath

Hi Kath, Thanks for finding this solution!

I have a similar problem, if I have a lot of splits but want to apply something to the whole track, at present I have to apply it to each individual split section at a time. I can't select all and then apply. (eg, change the volume across the whole video track 1).

Yes you can group them, this is useful for if you want to move the whole lot in one go, but still wont let you alter the parameters for all the split sections on the track.

I have tried what you suggest Kath and it works, hover close to the right edge so the mouse pointer turns to a film reel with 2 arrows and then drag as described to the end of all the footage you wish to join, select overwrite and bingo!

Thanks Kath

Cheers

Jason Kind Regards,

Jason
