Rendering in edit mode

I have updated to v2023 and subsequently have editing problem which was not there in v1703. After moving scenes to the timeline and trying to play either clips or movie, a green bar appears on the timeline growing in 2 second increments with a box above the timeline on the right side showing a progression of 2 second "rendering" . Consequently the playback of a clip or movie in edit mode jerks in 2 sec intervals. After 2 seconds of a clip is rendered a green bar increases by 2 secs, i.e., after each 2 secs are rendered the bar moves forward by 2 secs. 10 min of a movie takes about 20 min to render.

Once the whole clip is rendered it can be played back uninterrupted. Under these conditions editing is very difficult and very time consuming, e.g., if you switch clips you have to "rerender" them again. In the previous version editing was going very smoothly. Is there any options which was maybe accidentally selected that causes this "rendering" and can be disabled?
