Can I capture from a DV camcorder in DV-AVI format?

I am new to PD, having used Adobe Premiere Elements for years.

I want my capture from my camcorder to be lossless, so that when I edit the video it will be frame-accurate, and when I recode the video to MPEG-2 for DVD it will be as high quality as possible. When I capture from PD 11 I get MPEG files and I see no option to change this. Is this the best I can do with PD?

I have not done a DV capture for a while, but I do remember that every time I switched to DV, it would go back to MPEG 2. Others on here have reported having several options, so I don't know what the secret is. Maybe it depends on your camera. __________________________________

I guess I'm not sure what you mean. You said "When I capture from PD 11 I get MPEG files and I see no option to change this..."

What do you want to change this to?

I have an Canon HV30 HD tape camcorder and my two primary capture programs both capture as 1440 by 1080 mpg2 files. Neither allow you do do much else in terms of format. PD 11 give you some options for smaller format capture that is not what you want.

There is a free program named "HDVSplit" I have used it. It gives a HDV input and output. You can turn off the automatic split feature if you like. Unfortunately it is also a lossy format capture also.

What camcorder do you have? .

Hi stevek,

I want to change the capture format to DV-AVI; that is, DV format in an AVI container. Straight off the camera with no loss. MPEG-2 is not lossless, but maybe when burning to DVD PD 11 doesn't recode? That would be better but still not perfect. I hate to lose data before I edit anything.

My camera is a Sony DCR-TRV30. Not HD, but it shoots very nice video.

Thanks for the HDVSplit reference!

How are you connected to your computer - via firewire?

The program will recode only when necessarily around any edits.

I use my HD capture to make AVCHD discs and blu-ray discs. The quality is excellent. For Standard definition, you will not lose any significant resolution. .

If you wish to capture DV-AVI, in the capture module there is the PROFILE box, click on it and create a custom (very limited) profile.
