ColorDirector - Example footage showing 'Before/After' results
[Post New]
Here is a short video showing examples of underwater footage colour graded with Cyberlink ColorDirector v1.0

- link disabled -

Footage is unedited apart from the colour corrections made.

After a full week of editing with this software (And the whole PD11 Suite) my final opinion is that the biggest advantage of ColorDirector is also its biggest flaw - its oversimplified controls. I admit that I will probably become more skilled at using ColorDirector but I doubt the results will vary much.

Pros:

- Quick and easy workflow
- Keyframes
- Easy controls (also its biggest drawback)
- In line editing (colour grading done on the time-line in PowerDirector 11)
- Fairly decent results

Cons:

- No histogram. This means editing is done based on 'what the eye sees' and can lead to poor/mismatching results.
- No colour curve adjustments (replaced by sliders which are not as accurate). This is a big let down for anyone who is used to working with curves when making these adjustments. This means advanced editing also becomes next to impossible. For example: When using custom in camera colour profiles (flat profiles) which is becoming a very popular trend, you usually need to use look-up tables (usually in the shape of a S-curve LUT curve) for accurate results which requires colour curves. It is also incredibly hard to get satisfying results in terms of the overall contrast with the provided slider compared to using the traditional curves.

I could easily write a whole article as a review and elaborate even more but thought I'd keep this simple and I hope this clip is of some value to others interested in purchasing this software.

Hi Jaques -

Thanks for posting your thinking after intensively working with CDR for a short while.

I think many would agree with you - that the features available in ColorDirector aren't matched by the slider controls. Without colour scopes, it is visual & that makes it more hit & miss.

Anyway, kind of you to post the comparison video & your summary of pros & cons.

Cheers - Tony

I thought it looked pretty good. ~Tom~

Yes I think for the price the program needs a bit more time in the oven. Needs some more improved features.

Hello Primus 2112,

Yes - ColorDirector is a newly developed piece of software and there are improvements that can be made.

If you have particular suggestions, it would be great if you could add them to the suggestion box. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/27486.page

That way, we get different users' ideas in one spot to be forwarded to the R&D team.

Thanks! I wish there were more tutorials...I am currently brainstorming on ways that I can use and share with everyone on other ways to use the product... Stay tuned.

Members,

It's been necessary to delete a post made by a first time poster, who was asked by PM to edit his/her comments.

Members would be aware that personally derogatory posts that contribute nothing to the discussion are completely unacceptable. The forums should be happy respectful places to discuss the use of software.
