Removing Microphone Hiss

For my movie, I've recorded separate audio tracks on a Tascam DR-05 and external shotgun mic. Works nicely, but I'm left with a bit of hiss on the audio track, particularly on medium and wide shots (medium close-up and close-ups are pretty good because we got the mic a bit closer to the actor).

I tried using the Noise Reduction feature in AudioDirector and even at the lowest setting, it made dialogue sound "digital"...although it did remove the hiss.

Any other tips or tricks to remove hiss without making the actors sound like robots?

Hello HeFed,

Perhaps you could attach a short sample of the audio clip containing the "microphone hiss". Just trim out a section and SAVE it (without any editing). Members could then test your file to determine the best approach/settings.

Another possibility, beyone AudioDirector's built in filters & effects, is to download VST plug-ins like FishFillets http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=5 which may give you better control.

Thanks for the suggestions, PIX.

Attached are two files. First (dogman1) is the unaltered audio clip. Second (dogman2) is the clip after I run it through Noise Reduction with sensitivity at 1 (lowest) and level at 2 (lowest you can set and make any difference). You will hear in the altered clip how the actor's voice is robotic and "tinny", especially when he says "You..."

I'm no audio guru but I'll take a peek at the VST plug-ins too. Appreciate the advice!

Hello HeFed,

Thanks for attaching the files, very helpful.

When you look at your audio file (dogman1.WAV) in Visual Repair, you will notice that the hiss is spotted across the entire frequency of the audio file. That's what makes it a little tricky.

However, Noise Reduction is the tool for you to use to get rid of it. When you are in step 1, be sure to only select a range of the hiss sound of the audio waveform, i.e. only the audio content before your actor says "Professor". Once you select that, click the Analyze button. By doing this, AudioDirector can better detect the audio it needs to remove, and should leave the voice untouched.

I did this, then tried a setting at 2 and 2, and it seems better. In step 2 you select "Entire audio content" and then click Apply.

See my attached file. It seems to be better to me than your results.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more help.

Regards,
David

David/CLD,

Indeed, your cleanup does sounds pretty darn good! I'll give that method a try. Advice much appreciated!
