Can anyone tell me if there is a tutorial on how to use these NewBlueFX essentials 1 2 and 3. I don't seem to be able to find anything associated with FX and PowerDirector in YouTube or on the NewBlue site.

Each effect has only a small help screen that I am finding confusing.

Is there a tutorial basics to using the effects room with NewBlueFX?

If I place the effect on the effects line I get the template with pre-sets. If I want to do the picture in picture I get a completely different template and no pre-sets.

I must be doing something wrong, but unsure what.

Any help would be grateful

Regards

The user info is actually available when one selects the effect. The "HELP" section gives you detail on how the effect is used and what it does. Win 10, i7

I don't know of any tutorials specific to PD & NewBlue Effects.

Could you post a screen shot of what you've done so far? That would help describe the issue better.

You can place effects directly on the clip or in the effects track. Modifying or keyframing the effect is done slightly differently in each case.

If the effect is in the effects track:
1. select it & click Modify to set the parameters (if you want it to be constant)
2. Click keyframe to set varying parameters (if you want the effect to change throughout)

If the effect is directly on the clip:
1. select it & click Effect to set the parameters (if you want it to be constant)
2. Click keyframe to set varying parameters (if you want the effect to change throughout)

Cheers - Tony

Hi HDedit

Thanks for your reply.

Got in contact with NewBlue sent photo of problem.

Reply as follows, seems same problem in 11 as in 10. I think Cyberlink and NewBlue need to get together better based on the reply. It puts me off getting anymore of their effects. This is a great site and gives a very informed picture of what is going on.

"Charlie, Power Director 10 has some limitations. When using any of our effects that create an alpha channel, Power Director is ignoring that information and just showing a black background. Power Director also had a limit on the number of controls an effect could show. We have been working with Cyberlink and expect those limitations to be removed in Power Director 11."

Charlie -

That's correct. NewBlue & CL have had some problems "getting it together". PD doesn't support alpha channel video.

Still, the alpha channel issue doesn't apply to all effects... though I guess it does in your case. Which particular effect are you trying to apply?

Perhaps you could attach the image you sent to NewBlue.

You should also be aware that none of the NewBlue effects for PD use the GPU for acceleration, as per their support folks. So some of them are unbelievably S L O O O O W W with PD. I've even taken a coffee break with one of them. The effects are great on many high end editors however. Let's hope CL gets their act together ASAP. Win 10, i7

Charlie -

The advice you got from NewBlue is spot on for that Picture-in-Picture effect. It relies on transparency. Bottom line is, for that one, it's just taking up space & PD can't use it.

You could create that sort of effect in PiP Designer, but it would be much nicer if the NewBlue FX & PD talked to each other properly!

Many thanks to everyone for their advice and support.

Seems I have not spent my money wisely.

I had such hopes for this new version of PD, but its the usual, its not my fault its theirs we have your money now go away.

As you have also commented, it would be nice if they could get together and fix it up.

If the NewBlue has problems, remove it and let people know, don't set people up for a fall.

Thanks again to all concerned.

Kindest Regards

Hi charwend ,

I found the NewBlue Effects a delight to use.

NewBlue Effects were used in the "Video Effect": http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/24618.page#133797

All Videos have been available from launch and can be located at the beginning of the forum.

Yes, the NewBlue effects are indeed delightful. It's just that not all in the Essentials Pack, are fully functional in PD. Click here PDtoots for a collection of PowerDirector Tutorials and Tips

Hi Guys

thanks for the very valuable info.

The Tutorials are fantastic well presented and extremely informative, maybe PD should employ you thanks Dafydd.

NewBlue have replied stating they work in PD11, but I have sent further screen shoots to show they dont.

So waiting for them to reply again. Will keep you informed as to the reply as it seems to be an issue that many are interested in.

Kindest Regards

I was disappointed to find that the same problems with NewBlueFx's in 10 are still in 11. I was going to upgrade, but have no reason to now.

However, you can use the NewBlueFX Picture-in-Picture effect by also using PowerDirector's built-in ChromaKey effect. This works perfectly on video that doesn't use zero (total black) as a color. My DV-AVI clips are like that.

1. Add the NB PiP effect to a video clip on the timeline.
2. Make sure the clip is selected and then click the Modify button.
3. After the PD PiP Designer opens, tick the "Enable chroma key" checkbox.
4. Select the eyedropper and sample a totally black area in the preview window.
5. Set both the "Tolerance of intensity" and "Tolerance of hue" to 0.
6. Click the "Save" button on the PiP Designer.

7. Click the "Effect" button and select a NB PiP preset or manually adjust the NB PiP settings. Note that the names of the NB PiP presets may not be matched up correctly with the corresponding effect, or that the "Picture Opacity" value may be set to 0 instead of a greater value.

Thanks for your info in the workaround.

So far Cyberlink have come back with

In regards to your concern, I regret to inform you that we are unable to reproduce the issue, so I would request you to provide me the detail reproduce steps . (Initially, when you installed NewBlue VEII before install PowerDirector 11 and what additional PowerDirector 11 files did you installed?) that create crash issue.

Please feel free to contact us back for any further clarification or for any assistance related to CyberLink Products. Use the below mentioned link to get back to us for your further queries:

Problems also now exist with reverse video crashes program and FX Vignette.

I sent the following to Cyberlink this morning.

Process so far as requested.
Purchase upgrade to PD11, downloaded zip files and installed PD11. Still had PD10 installed. This doubled up on the some special effects in PD11. Purchased FX NewBlue Video Essentials for Windows via your link in PD11, NewBlue Video Essentials II for Windows and NewBlue Video Essentials III for Windows. Installed them and started to play with them. Placed two small clips into timeline and placed fx PIP into bottom clip. This produced the first problem of black background in second clip with two white boarders one thicker than the other. I got in contact with FX and was told this was a problem that should have been fixed in PD11. They then told me to download and install their v1.4 of essentials 2. I did this and it changed from black background , with the two boxes to the two PIP but the second clip when sizing was much smaller than the clips boarder. I then removed PD10, thinking there may be a conflict. No change in problem. I then uninstalled both PD11 and my FX products. Reinstalled PD11 and only FX 2. Same problem. Decided to try other FX overlays. Vignette would also crash. I then found my reverse video would just hang and I would have to restart program. I really don’t want to have to reinstall my operating system. I do hope this isn't going to be a major problem and that you will find a fix for it as it’s not a cheap process to upgrade and add the recommended FX products.
Please let me know if this is any help to you or you need further information.

So will wait for further instructions from Cyberlink.

Thanks again for your help

Hi charwend ,
Thank you for providing the information given to CyberLink support. Presenting information for others to replicate the event should be in bullet point form in my view.
1. Stipulate each action carried out - briefly.
2. Presents information in a structured form.
3. Easier for the reader to pick up on.
4. Overcomes language barrier limitations (to a degree).
5. Stick to the facts!
6. Limit comments to a followup and NOT part of the "Action list"

Please follow the guide info Part D and the whole of the guide layout.

Ok so far no good on a fix, but have now got links for PD11 customers for Essentials, Essentials 11 and 111

I have been using PD10 downloads.

http://www.newbluefx.com/downloads/Cyberlink/PDR11/NewBlueVideoEssentials3ForWindowsSetup14-120830.exe

www.newbluefx.com/downloads/Cyberlink/PDR11/NewBlueVideoEssentials2ForWindowsSetup14-120904.exe

www.newbluefx.com/downloads/Cyberlink/PDR11/NewBlueVideoEssentialsForWindowsSetup14-120830.exe

I guess this is a start, still have a problem once effect is applied to clip and I try to change from the default settings in the drop down box effect. Windows 7 closes PD11 and states it is looking to solve the problem and that is it.

Hope this helps some of you.

Hi Members -

http://youtu.be/TakEt4gW6VY

This is more like a sampler than a toot, but it shows examples of each of the NewBlue FX in Art, Motion, Paint & VideoEssentials I, II & III.

Some of the effects in Video Essentials aren't properly functional in PD, like ChromaKey! Letterbox & Picture-inPicture require alpha channel support - hence the black surround. Xerox's workaround, posted above, is a good way to use them in PD.

Some effects - Flash Removal & Rolling Shutter - need affected clips to observe their impact.

Cheers - Tony (for PDtoots)

P.S. There aren't any prizes for spotting the spelling blunder in one of the titles.
