editing and saving uncompressed files...
[Post New]
Is there a way in PD9 to cut my original .mts files then save them without producing them. I want to save original files uncompressed, but some are long and only a portion of them are needed. I'd love to be able to cut off the excess video so I'm not wasting valuable memory space. If I produce it, however, raren't I compressing it?

Hope I'm making myself clear. Thanks for any help!

Hi nightowl123,
Bring the video into PD9, Split/Edit (do NOT add any effects or changes) and then Produce to H264/AVC [AVCHD]. Choose a profile that matches your original video. SVRT will kick in and you'll save a file that's not been "re-rendered".

Dafydd,

Not sure what you mean by choose a profile that matches my original video. Does the H264/AVC not compress the file?

After saving as H264/AVC, could I add it to a movie I'm going to render as .mov and it keep it's resolution?

Thanks!

Hi nightowl123,
H264/AVC, if you select "the right profile" that matches your mts file then SVRT will speed up your production. You indicated you wanted to split the clips to end up with and retain short sections. SVRT will help retain quality if you choose H264/AVC.

If you choose to CONVERT your video to MOV you are taking longer and during render/produce you can loose quality.

A video editor should retain quality closest to the original footage.

If I can just add my twopenn'orth, what Dafydd is saying is that having selected H.264 AVC you should create a new profile (click the '+' sign to do this) in which you set the bit rates the same as your original sources. Then when you produce PD uses SVRT to detect that the bit rates are the same so it then passes the original code through without re-encoding.

To find the bit rates of your source files you could use something like MediaInfo.

Dafydd,

I'm planning on saving the files I asked you about after I've knocked off the chaff but I'll also be making a seperate one from the original in the .mov format because, at the current time, it's the only format pond5.com's stock site will accept and I upload my videos there.

This way, though, after I've uploaded the .mov to Pond5 I can then delete that file since I'll have a higher resolution file already saved (and backed up). That will definitely save me some memory not having to keep all my .mov produced vids.

Fenman,

Thanks, that helps. Now I just have to find those bit rates.

Thanks to both of you for your help! I've bookmaked this thread and will be working on it in the next day or two. If I've any questions, I'll be back!

Hi Dustie,

Thank you for the reply - always good to know what has happened and purpose etc.

I'd love to see some of the footage you've edited, uploaded to pond5.com - would be very interesting and hopefully enjoyable to view.

I'm sure other members would appreciate anything you share as well.

Dafydd,

Of course I'd love to share my clips at Pond5, thanks for asking. All have been rendered in PD9.

Just hop over to pond5.com and type artist:AylorDraw in the search.

That's my alias for Pond5. I was dabbling in music compositions and thought the name Aylor Draw sounded cooler then Dustie. ; Dustie

My newest venture is going to be creating a DVD called

"The Nature of Beautiful Bella Visa - Lakes Edition"

All summer I've been going out in my boat as much as possible on the lakes here in Bella Vista, AR (there are 7 of them) and taping wildlife. I plan on putting them all into a "movie" that I can offer for sale on my website (www.beautifulbellavista.com) and, hopefully, locally as well.

It's ambitious, to say the least. Have only done short clips up till now, with basic editing. Cutting everything together into a movie to put on DVD is going to be a challenge and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you guys.

Hi Dustie,
Thank you for sharing. To make it easier: http://www.pond5.com/video-sound-effects-music-after-effects-photos-illustrations-3d-models/1/AylorDraw.html

I have bookmarked your pages.

I've only clicked on one so far - the Eastern Chipmunk, made me laugh, I thought it was a still until I saw the greenery moving, then whoosh, away went the chipmunk, ha! I will enjoy looking through your collection.
