PD10 says my files are 29.97 fps. I disagree. Please help us.

Hi,

I'm new to PD, and new to this forum. Sadly my first post will be about a problem.

I have been working with a few other video editing softwares before, most recently Adobe Premiere Pro. I bought PD10 after a friend praised it's simplicity. But probably not simple enough for me... I can't get PD10 to accept my PAL files as PAL files.

I created my first PD10 project yesterday, starting with importing some files, generating from my Canon 5D mk2 (firmware version 2.2.1). Since then I've been reading tutorials and forums, and googled to the end of the internet.

I've set my general TV format to PAL (25 frames).
My camera is set to capture progressive 1920x1080 25 fps.
But when I drag a clip from the library window to the editing workspace, I get a message saying "TV Format Conflict" and "The clips you dragged to the workspace contains one or more video clips with a (NTSC) TV format. Your preferred TV format setting is (PAL)."
Looking at the clip's frame rate in PD10's properties dialog, it states 29.97 fps.

I've checked the properties of these clips in VLC, QuickTime Player and MediaInfo. They all say the frame rate IS 25 fps.
I downloaded a test version of Adobe Premiere Elements - 25 fps.
I really don't know what to do now.

I've read the manual, watched tutorials, scanned forums and used Google to all of my abilities. I can't find any advise or settings to help me. I would love if someone told me I'm an idiot and that the solution is obvious.

I will attach a sample clip and info in a zip file about my setup, and info about the clip from various software, but here is the short version of it:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
16384MB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4850

PD10 - Version: 10.0.0.1703 - SR: VDE120306-01

QuickTime Version 7.7 (1680.34)
VLC Media Player 2.0.3

Canon 5D mk2 (firmware version 2.2.1)

No extra codec packs

Kind Regards
Jonas Andersson

Hi Jonas -

If you're confident (and you should be with all the confirmation you have) that the clips are indeed PAL format, you can be equally confident that PD is misreading the frame rate.

To triple check, use MediaInfo to analyse the clips' properties - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

In Preferences, under Confirmation, you can uncheck the TV format alert (I have them all unchecked except the full screen option).

Cheers - Tony

It would be nice to have a longer sample. Five seconds would be good. Some video of very short duration may not be read correctly by PowerDirector. Gateway DX4380, AMD A8-5500 Quad Core 3.2GHz with ATI Radeon HD 7560D; 16GB RAM; 1 TB SATA 7200 RPM; Windows 8 Pro 64-bit; PDR11, PDVD12.

Hi Tony and Xerox,

Thanks for the replies.

MediaInfo is one of the applications I've used to check the clips, and it states that the clips ARE 25.000 fps.

I unchecked the alert. Since this project doesn't depend on top image quality, I decided to keep working. It seems to render quite nicely when I did a test.

But my concern is if PD makes unnecessary conversions when it misreads the frame rate.

Attached is a longer clip from the same day and session. Most of the clips in this project are about 2-3 minutes. They all are read by PD as 29.97 fps.

I appreciate your input.

Well, my 1st reply has been stolen, maybe it will be returned at some stage. Here is a copy.

I can confirm your issue in PD10, it may change in the (very) soon to be released PD11 but I wouldn't put a lot of money on it

Interestingly in PD9 3305 there is no problem - not that that helps much but.....

The question really is :
Does the message really mean anything ie the message is triggered but is the file wrongly "imported" and therefore "degraded" by undergoing some form of frame rate conversion or is it imported correctly and the message is spurious??

I'm not sure how to test that other than trying it and producing to a custom profile to match the original and examining it visually??

A quick test shows that PD10 with a custom profile of 41.5 mbs does produce a 25fps file roughly matching the original but using a different codec profile. The content of your clip does not allow any judgement of visual quality.

However, importing the produced clip into PD also triggers off the warning message, even though it was produced by PD @25fps.

I suspect the warning message is spurious but.....

Cheers

Thanks for the reply and confirmation, Adrian.

I think what you're saying seems quite plausible. And I will try to live with it for now. But I would really want to know what's going on under the bonnet... Interesting that the PD produced clip also triggers the warning.

I will just try to ignore it. But since a big part of my "proper job" is to hunt software bugs, it's against my nature.

Thank you for the input.

Just chiming in again to confirm Adrian's confirmation.

PD9 reads the framerate correctly. PD10 doesn't. PD11 - ???

Aside from that glitch, PD10 produces as it should to PAL format. It just thinks it's NTSC!

Really nice to hear, Tony.

I'll put my faith in the release of PD11 then, and hope for the best.
And in the meantime I will just trust PD10 to do the right thing...

Thanks!

Guys, I have the same problem and did a search and first came up with this thread.

I have just upgraded to PD10 from PD8. I have a Sanyo Xacti VPC-FH1.

It is always set to PAL.

When dragging the clips to the timeline in BOTH PD8 and PD10 I get the same warning that my settings are to NTSC. I just this minute did three test clips with settings of both PAL and NTSC in 60FPS and 60 fields /s and got the same msg for all three.

I am not sure what to read into your answers above so not sure if they apply to my situation as well or not.

One other problem that was encountered in PD8 has been overcome in PD10 and that is the freezing of the preview window between clips in either Full HR or Full HD (60FPS or 60 Fields/s). Bit of a relief!

Thanks,

Phil.
