Which format is better for future editing, AVI or H.264?

I captured a large AVI file from a DV tape. After editing the file I would like to save it preserving the clips for additional editing in the future. I can save the project as a new AVI file which will preserve the clips. However, what is a better format: AVI or H.264 to keep the individual clips and the audio and video without any degradation for future editing?
Thanks,

Keep the original format IF you have the hard drive free space.

That AVI format is uncompressed; pretty much anything else has some compression.

If you don't have the disk space, I doubt if you will lose much if you use the H264 format.

Note that there are some AVI file types that are highly compressed (DivX or XVid) but I doubt that you have that issue. .

Hi Milan,

Common sense is keeping your footage in its original format unless you consider economic factors. I would further recommend hard disks over optical disks as long-term storage media.

I agree, keep the original format if possible. If you have to compress the video, use the highest bitrate possible. __________________________________
