I am using PD10 ultra on WIN7 64bit. I have imported an AVI file about 40 min long. It shows on a timeline as one clip. Is there a way to split it into individual clips for editing? I tried to use split function but it did not work.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Select the clip on the time line (it will turn blue). Move to the spot where you would like to split by watching or move the scrubber manually. Click on the split button above the timeline. This will split the clip at the point you have selected. Move to the next desied split location and click the split button again. Repeat this until you have the clips split up as desired.

On thing to note, although the clip appears to be split in the timeline, this does not actually split the original clip. It only marks the clip for your editing purposes. The original video is kept intact.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Thanks. Will I be able to manipulate the clips, e.g., moving around, delete, etc.

Yes you will. You can do anything you want/can to the clips on the timeline. Edit and move to your hearts content.

I only mentioned that the original clip remains untouched so you would not fear hurting the original video while editing.

To save the changes you have made in the timeline you go to the 'Produce' module and produce what is on the timeline to a new video file. By save here I do not mean save the project, but to create a new file that contains the edits you have made.

Saving the project as a .pds file, with the save/saveas function, saves a record of the media you have in the project and any edits to the media you have made in the timeline. It is basically a text file with your instructions for your edits.

The chunks will not appear as seperate entities in the media library, if that was your question. If you remove a chunk, it will cease to exist. Jerry Schwartz

Thanks to all. Actually, the comments led me to explore various options and I found a way of splitting a large AVI file saved as one clip into individual clips in a "batch" mode.

- Open file in PD tool bar
- Select New project
- Select Import media file (a window pops up)
At the bottom half of the pop-up in "Cyberlink RichVideo" section click on an icon on the right side "detect scene". A series of clips from the AVI file will appear in the space. Select individual clips or select all by highlighting the first clip (click on it) and Shift-click on the last one. All selected clips will be highlighted.
-Click on the OPEN button. The batch of clips will be now moved to the editing window and will appear as one clip with a yellow folder mark on the right bottom corner of the clip.
-Click on the yellow mark and the folder will expand into individuals clips, which you can now move around a edit on the time line in any sequence you want. Some of the clips may be still larger and may need to be split individually if desired.

Thanks again
