Using Scenes

I have never used scenes before, and I just decided on a whim to try it. I took a two-hour video and had PD detect scenes before I imported the file. Before I put the idea back the junk drawer, does anyone have any comments on my experience?

  • Unlike a clip, when I added a scene to the timeline there was no indication in the media library to indicate that it was in use.
  • When I put only the very first scene onto the timeline, navigation was horrendously slow. It was almost impossible to locate a specific spot in the video, because it took almost a second to render the frame under the scrubber. Navigating the original clip was easy, with rendering instantaneous (in human terms).
  • I couldn't make heads or tails of how the scene detection worked. Since this video actually was shot in "scenes" (actually, many segments spliced together), I thought this would be very handy; but the scene starts and stops seemed to be completely arbitrary.

  • Did I miss something? Is anyone else using scene detection?

I take it back: navigating the full clip wasn't really faster than the scene. My other comments stand.

The inability to place check-marks on detected scenes once placed in the timeline was always a disappointment, and a general pain in the posterior. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I also couldn't figure out how to remove the "rich video" from a file. I decided the scenes were nothing but a PITA, so I wound up restoring a previous version.

Since the scenes weren't split on any rational basis (and I mean really bad), this is going back into the junk drawer. Jerry Schwartz
