Is it better to use png files or gif files when importing. I have the same picture in both formats.

It shouldn't make any difference; both are supported. Typically any differences would be caused by the resolution differences or by any image editing software. Where did you get the pictures?

What do you intend to do with the pictures? Did you know that:

Hi,
some gif images are limited to 256 colors I would suggest png as the better choice.
Depending how gif were saved.
