Dear All -

I've been using PD10 all this time & today, for the first time, attempted to use the automatic beat detection feature in PD.

The audio clip in question happened to be an MP3. Right click > Use Automatic Beat Detection > default settings... as soon as I click "Detect", PD crashes.

I then tested 10 other MP3 files from various sources, all with the same sad result. Using .WAV & .WMA conversions of the same files, beat detection completes correctly & markers are inserted.

Maybe I missed something. Maybe this has already been uncovered.

Windows pointed me at the attached documents which (supposedly) describe the problem. Details are attached.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony

Those pesky MP3's in PD10, I dunno

If you post the 'offending' MP3, I can run it through my machine and see If I can duplicate this issue.

Hi Neil -

From my observation here, I think you could just about use ANY MP3 file... in fact that might make it a more valid test.

Is it MP3s? Is it my PC environment?

I dunno either!

Hi Tony,
I have a hearing problem and wear amplified head phones, and don't usually play with audio, but I tried a clip and went to Beat detection and detected and everything worked fine here, no crashes any way...but not sure what is supposed to happen LOL
there was a notice for upgrade sound tracks from smart sound.

Thanks Jim -

Just so we know we're talking about the same thing, here's a screen capture of the crash event. It's totally predictable on my PC.

Hi Tony

Sorry I've taken so long to get to you. Enjoying a rather sunny day in Melbun

I inserted a MP3 clip (see attachment to compare apples with apples) and Beat Detection work flawlessly.

No problems here with MP3s. I can see that the FFDShow Audio Decoder for MP3 is being used by the presence of the FFDShow Audio icon in the system tray. I happen to have the Klite Codec Pack installed. Gateway DX4380, AMD A8-5500 Quad Core 3.2GHz with ATI Radeon HD 7560D; 16GB RAM; 1 TB SATA 7200 RPM; Windows 8 Pro 64-bit; PDR11, PDVD12.

Sun? Melbourne? Huh?

Neil -

I'll forgo your kind offer to attach everything loosely associated with the issue. Been there. Done that. Give up. Too hard.

Wasted a mountain of time chasing MP3s with PD before & I'm not going there again. In deference to the guy who solved my previous MP3 woes by suggesting I change my speaker settings, I've done that - stereo, quad, 5.1, 7.1 - no difference.

I appreciate you taking the time to test it Neil, even though your results leave me out in the cold (so what's new?).

Cheers - Tony

Thanks Xerox!

Yes - I noticed the FFDshow icon there too... for the first time. Glad to hear it's only me.

While I didn't crash, I noticed that some of the mp3 clips were longer than the actual music. When I did beat detection, only the first 3 minutes of 4 minutes showed detection. Beats weren't detected for the last minute. I converted the MP3 to WAV, and that's when I noticed the big difference in length, waveforms, and beat detection.

For me that means I'm not going to use MP3's in PowerDirector. Gateway DX4380, AMD A8-5500 Quad Core 3.2GHz with ATI Radeon HD 7560D; 16GB RAM; 1 TB SATA 7200 RPM; Windows 8 Pro 64-bit; PDR11, PDVD12.

Tony and all,

I tried a short mp3 (30 sec) and one 5+ min long, no problems in detecting the beat all the way to the end of the file, I have no codecs packs installed so I didn't have the FFDshow icon. Don't know if it has anything to do with it...maybe a conflict of sorts.

It seems there is divergence of opinions and results here, so I guess I’ll add my two cents worth, which is about all the below here is worth.

But I’ve got a feeling that Beat Detection was intended for, or optimized for .wav audio files.
One reason is that in the PD10 Help files, the Beat Detection instruction references analyzing waveforms (as in a .wav file). And because .wav files are uncompressed.
I would "guess" (nothing more), that the peaks and valleys of the waveform of an uncompressed .wav file is more easily detected.
And I know that when I import audio to my favored third party WAV audio editor, that editing .wav files provides for far more accuracy, than when trying to edit an Mp3.

Mp3’s (in my unsupported opinion), are / were created as a way to share, download/upload, and stream audio across the net. But is not an ideal audio format suited for editing.
However, I’d be happy to be shown the errors in my unsupported logic here. So fire away.

Cranston, I agree with what your saying..
I really wouldn't think of editing an .mp3 anyway. All my edits are done as .wav's. Much, much easier to do with an uncompressed file. Honestly, I don't think I have ever edited an .mp3.

Is there a tutorial anywhere that explains what Beat Detection is used for?

I have never heard of its use before this thread. ~Tom~

Hi Tony,
have just downloaded the clip you supplied, Jolly clever. I tried the Beat detection on an MP3 file and it worked just fine. I have only just started to use PD10 and its seems quite reliable, maybe like PD9 was supposed to be?

Sorrry I can't join you in your dilemna?

Tony,
I rushed off to test but sadly (very sadly) I realised after a search that I actually have no mp3s on my little laptop! That's what comes of travelling light and having a separate ipod thingy. I cannot help, but I will try to listen again to one of my 78s and wonder at the technological advances that make life soooooo much easier these days.

Cheers

Thanks for checking, Don.

Adrian - my 78s won't even fit in the disc drive!

CP - absolutely agree with you about editing WAV files. In my case, it just happened to be that the track I grabbed from iTunes was in MP3 format.

Interestingly (I guess), Automatic Beat Detection throws up different results for the same track in different formats. I can't test MP3s obviously! This track has an unmistakeable & unmissable beat - Another One Bites the Dust (Queen)!

With the minimum set to 2.0 seconds (default), beat markers are set differently for WAV & WMA - and BOTH inaccurate. With the minimum set to 0.1 seconds (min), the markers on the .WAV file are closer to true.

Cheers - Tony

Hello all, I am new to this forum and fairly new to this product but love it so far. My problem seems to be when using beat detection it lowers the volume in the background such as gun fire which I want to hear. I make a lot of gaming videos and want to hear the game chat and so forth. Has anybody else have this same problem. I am also using the MP3 format.
