MTS Files to hard to edit, what should I convert to before editing?

I have a Panasonic SD60 Video camera which records MTS footage/files.

I have tried importing them directly into PD9, and they work, but are to hard to work on due to slow/choppy/lag etc, have also played with the preview settings, but have had no joy.

I will use 'Freemake' converter to convert the original MTS files into something different, but am wondering which is the best to convert it to befor editing? WMV,AVI,Mp4? I have experimented a little, and each of them come out with a much smaller file size(WMV being the smallest), and all work fine and smoothly while editing. But want to know which one will be best to use for keeping up the best quality possible??? I will ultimately be using the movies for burning to DVD and youtube vids.

Also, which is the best format to produce the movie in for standard dvd players? MPEG-2 DVDHQ?

If MTS files are hard to edit, your computer is probably underpowered.

DVDs are native MPEG2 HQ at 8300 Kbps. The format on the disk are VOB files.

I realize that my pc may not be up to editing MTS files, and would like to know which format is the best to use, other than MTS the original file? is either WMV,AVI,or mp4 the best bet to convert it to to edit?

You may wish to stay with MTS, but reduce it to 720, that is a choice.
Your specs reveal a 2.1ghz dual core 32bit system on Vista and only 2gig RAM.
Vista is reported as not a good OS for video.
32bit does not allow for much RAM use, but you could double it with some success.
You may wish to enable shadow(proxy) files to improve your experience, and resist playing too many tricks in the timelines.

Thanks for the reply Barry,

Firstly, how would I change the raw files to 720, and stay with MTS?

And in the preferenc settings, should any of these boxes be ticked/un-ticked for my setup, that would help with my editing..

Preference Menu:

'GENERAL' - Enable HD video processing , enabled or not?
'HARDWARE ACCELERATION' - Enable AMD accelerated parallel processing technology to speed up video effect preview/render, enabled or not?

-Enable hardware decoding , enabled or not?

What formats should .mts files to be converted to depends on what editing tools you are using. If you use Adobe Premiere Pro, suggest you to convert MTS to AVI; If using Windows Movie Maker, to convert MTS to WMV is better; If Final Cut Pro, just convert MTS to MP4 or MOV.

The trouble with converting MTS files to something easier for you to edit is the loss of quality. If you are sure you will always be satisfied with DVD quality (not HD) that won't be a problem. But if you want to produce HD video you will need to migrate to BluRay and you will want the MTS files your camera produces. YouTube videos can be as high as 1080p as well, so you will want to stick with the MTS files if you want the best possible quality on YouTube.

I've had good luck editing 1920x1080 shot at 29 frames per second in PowerDirector 13 on a low-end laptop. It takes some patience but the results are worth it. I produce 1080p MP4 files for uploading to YouTube and 3D BD movies on BluRay disks. The 3D BD format is 1920x1080 at 24 frames per second. It automatically plays in 3D or 2D to match the TV's capabilities.

Save up for a better computer. I agree with Fabbian about the potential loss in quality.

Hi People,
Please start a new topic for your own issue rather than adding to another editor's thread that ended in 2012.

The two advert posts added here after the OP's posts have been removed.
