I've had problems caused by relics (saved presets) of the Beta and/or PD 2011.

I removed all traces of the beta and all saved presets and so far no more crashes with the release version...

I've been trying to make my PhD 3 fall over, to try to replicate your crash, but I can't.

I've imported up to 599 photos, a mixture of RAW & JPEG files, deleted files in groups of up to 50... all without a hitch. To further test the import process, I was importing from an external (USB) drive.

You would have noticed, after/during import of large numbers of images, that it takes PhD a while to render. There's a fairly insignificant render progress bar in the top right corner. During that rendering process, right click > delete/remove from album is disabled (greyed out).

N.B. My most recent import of 345 photos has been sitting at 99% rendering the whole time I've been typing this.

I'm only guessing, because I'm unable to replicate the issue here, that there may have been some interference between the concurrent rendering & deleting processes (and possibly related to the other program you were using).

Prior to installing PhD 3, I completely removed the Beta version using Revo Uninstaller to clear any registry footprint). That was possibly unnecesary, but I like to start with a clean slate (so to speak).

If I get it to fall over, you'll be the firsat to know!

I've found a way to easily throw PhD into a spin so you get the spinning wheel of death as it tries to open. The only option is to call up Task Manager & force the task to end.

Having imported large numbers of images previously, I then did a combination of renaming a whole folder full of photos (in Windows, with PhD closed down) & moved another group of files to a different location. When I tried to open the previous project, I got all the alerts about checking the project etc & had to force PhD to close.

I think there's a lesson in that!

I wound up doing a complete uninstall of PhD3 and then a reinstall. Unfortunately, the PhD3 software I have (a free version because I purchased PhotoDirector 2011 late in its lifespan) required me to have PhD 2011 on my computer when I did a reinstall.

So, I had to go through the hassle of that extra step. Not a very well throught out process by Cyberlink. They didn't think about customers having to do a reinstall.

So far, I have imported only RAW files into my PhD3 catalog, avoiding TIFs and JPGs for the moment while I try to figure out what happened to cause the failure of my program to run.

No. I don't think so. I've never had that problem in any other program.

I haven't encountered that problem since my initial report.

I had the same problem with PHD3 after I had imported over 50,00 pics, and having spent a number of days making albums, and filling tons of info into the metadata. Program crashes on opening. Up comes the send data box. I uninstalled (using Revo - on highest setting), and reinstalled (1st 2011, then upgrade to 3). Same problem happens immediately. Did this a number of times. Getting quite frustrated. I was finally able to get back in, by, going to Explorer, showing hidden system files, and deleting EVERYTHING from CyberLink. Then reinstalling 2011, and upgrading to 3.

Unfortunately, ALL my previous work is gone!. Am a little concerned about this happening again.

Any advice from those with knowledge about all this??

I've had various problems with PhD3 crashing - "stopping working" - even when I haven't been doing too much heavy editing.

Like you, I've followed the complete uninstall/reinstall route & that has usually cleared the issue. I use Revo too.

You say your previous work is gone. That shoudln't be the case, even after a complete uninstall.

Your PhD projects are saved in either the default location C:\Users\xxxx\Documents or the location you've set in Preferences. Open PhD & go to File > Open Project (Ctrl+O) & navigate to the project in question. If it's been deleted, it wasn't by the uninstall process.
