The search-function

The past couple of weeks I have been working on a matter in an area not
very well known to me. I soon discovered I would need help and answers.
“The google function” is a good tool, but when you are in a spesific area,
you suspect there will be a forum. Sure enough, for my task, I found the forum.

There are so many knowledgeable people in different areas in the world, we
hardly need to buy a manual anymore.
The first thing greeting you on the top of the page was a search box.
You couldn’t miss it. Large box, large letters.

I have used that box extensively these past two weeks.
I could actually find everything I needed answers to using it.
To my surprise, the search went back all the way to 2007/2008.
( To my surprise, because I’m only used to this forum’s search function which
doesn’t really work well and often is limited)

With so many people likely to have the same – or similar- question/problem,
wouldn’t it be appropriate to have the search-tab more visible, and the
function better working?
Through the years so many of the same questions are posted.
Members should be more able to post links to earlier posts/threads,
and the search function ought to be an eye-catcher.

- just the famous two-cents……

Just something.

I am not familiar with Jforum, but I assume the search is as designed by the people who wrote the code for the forums. It would be nice if it was a little more visible. I like the forums that have a search at the bottom of the page for searching that particular forum, as well as a general search. __________________________________

Nina,
I started bitchin' about the size of the search button 2 years ago. Only the people who care about it are we who use it.
The people that design the teeny-tiny but oh-so-important search button that does not work very well even when you actually SEE it. do not care. Oh, that may not be Cyberlink, it may be a function of the software, but CL could make 'em enlarge it, and work better, or get new forum software. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Hi,
I'll add a bit here.

I have used a number of forum scripts over the years, run them on websites and played with the jforum script for a while to.

Barry's point about the "search" text link size, at the top of the page, was passed on a number of times. Google searching can be localised with the use of inverted commas/quotation marks on specific words.

Forum databases become huge and slow when loaded with data, they work best when kept tight and fit with less baggage. Early posts on all forums are often "archived" and are set to one side for those who want to look at. I don't think that's currently possible with the jforum script. Amalgamation of older forums is used. It is messier for sure but that's what the techies who look after the forum can do. A complete new forum may lead to even more complaints.

I have integrated Google script into a search page on a number of websites in the past and while that is an effective engine it also throws up unwanted results for different websites. I use Google on occasions to find answers to some reported issues and of course to gain additional information.

Most important of all the jforum script here is integrated into the CyberLink website.

4 pennyworth from me!

Dafydd
