Blu-Ray playback still not viable compared to other media players

Half the Blu-Ray discs I get are unwatchable because they try to force you to watch 20 minutes of commercials before they let you get to the menu. Fortunately, every decent Blu-Ray player provides a way to bypass this and skip straight to the menu so you can start the movie. The physical players usually have upgradeable firmware. And all the software players I've tried, except PowerDVD, let you skip the commercials. But, with PowerDVD, when you put a Blu-ray disc in and the commercials start, the 'title menu', 'root menu', the jump to a specific title, etc., are all grayed out and disabled, so there's no way to actually start the movie!

So unless you've got nothing else to do with your life than mindlessly start at 20 minutes of commercials before being allowed to watch your movie, it's impossible to watch Blu-Ray movies on PowerDVD, and PowerDVD just isn't a viable option for Blu-Ray. But, I still buy PowerDVD *ONLY* because I'm trying to learn Spanish and PowerDVD is the only media player that let's you watch Spanish movies with both English and Spanish sub-titles (the other major media players don't have secondary sub-titles). So I have to use PowerDVD for Spanish DVD's only, and another media player for Blu-Ray's.

I just upgraded to version 12 hoping PowerDVD would have finally fixed this glaring problem of the 'grayed out menu/title' options, so I could use PowerDVD for Blu-Ray's too, but the problem still exists, so PowerDVD still isn't viable for Blu-Ray.

Are you guys EVER going to fix this so PowerDVD will let you skip the commercials, like the other Blu-Ray software players do?

I went with PowerDVD because it was usually rated one of the best.

Upon actually owning the software. Theres no way this is worth 100 dollars.

I'm no Blu-Ray expert, but I can only assume that forcing you to see the commercial is part of Blu-Ray specification. If my guess is true, then you can't expect a commercial player to go around this.
What you could do is install AnyDVD HD, or a similar SW that would allow you to go straight to the movie.

I'm puzzled to hear that you are having a problem. When I start a Blu-ray I have the usual "Previous" and "Next" buttons available and enabled at the bottom of the screen and I use the "Next" button to skip over each trailer.

Rather than Title or Root menu (which I was under the impression were chiefly for DVD) try the Blu-ray specific pop-up menu (Ctrl+P). This skips trailers for me on Universal's discs, at least.

In addition, one way to skip "unskippable" trailers that sometimes works on Blu-ray as it did on DVD and even VHS beforehand is to fast-forward through the trailers.

From what I have been witness too, most if not all commecial players won't let you pick a title or pop up menu with commercial playback but most if not all of them will allow you to push chapter next and skip them. That's how its been working in my house since blu rays came out. PS3 is a perfect example of one such player. There are many more that will let you use chapter next to skip them. One big issue that cyberlink is failing to mention but seems to be a big problem is windows media center integration. While playing back a bluray inside mediacenter it will not allow you to click chapter next via the remote control. That being the windows media center remote rc6. It will however let you click next via the mouse and the on screen menu that comes up when you shake your mouse. If you have a media type keyboard with the media player buttons on it then that will also work just fine. I suspect cyberlink is trying to make us watch commercials on purpose. I posted a similiar problem on a different thread where I discovered the chapter next worked fine outside media center. So it's specifically the media center experience they want to control.

Hi Digitalone,

" So it's specifically the media center experience they want to control."

No, this looks like issue on your specific platform. Next Chapter button is just working fine.
