I downloaded trial version of PowerDirector 10 and tried to trim .VOD file into 15-mins movie with new soundtrack. It did write AVI clip but the file size came at 3.6Gb instead of expected 600Mb. And that was not HD movie. I noticed there was no compression codec available. Is it because it is Trial version? In Trial limitations it did not mention compression codec.

Sounds to me like you wanted to make a DivX avi. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

I didn't try the trial version, but my paid version has the option upon selecting "publish", which then gives you several choices on how to "publish" the file in MPEG-2, WMV, MPEG4 or H.264. All which are creating files much smaller than the .AVI format

Most new editors are confused by the AVI label. At one time most web video was various forms of AVI. The AVI in PowerDirector is uncompressed video and is very large. As previously pointed out, choose another format, like WMV or MPEG 4. __________________________________

Hmm, what a bummer.. most videos used today are in AVI format. If PowerDirector cannot write compressed AVI, like most cheaper or even free programs do, it is almost a showstopper for me

Yes it's true most videos are avi format, yes it is the largest format for video file size wise, nothing that PD does, it just is...., but not necessarily the best quality.... just depends on what you want to do with it. Actually I seldom use avi any more..... I am sure I am not the only one in here..... __________________________________________

AVI was first introduced by Microsoft in 1992 it has not seen updates since that time and as a consequence is an old format, yet it is useful as a uncompressed audio/video container, thus it's large footprint.

The latest AVI is known as AVI 2.0 but still came out way before our modern digital cameras and editing software.

DVI-AVI types 1 & 2 are containers that are compressed but have a variable encoding methods

PD10 is true to AVI as originally created by MS and is doing exactly what it should in encoding and decoding, if you want smaller files you need to choose a diferent format but AVI will always been known as a 'lossless' codec.
