Hello to all. I'm new to this type of thing, but need some professional opinions. I'm an "oldie but goodie" senior and don't have a lot of expendable cash laying around.
1st. I like to take videos and then edit them into something other than a disc full of individual clips. Nothing fancy. Maybe a title, transitions and then some background music or narration. I currently have one video editing program that is 2 yrs old and can't get any tech/forum support. I am now in the beginning stages of exploring PD 10 (not ultra) trial version and so far, am fairly impressed with it. However, I'd like to make sure I give it a fair trial, so, on to my questions.
2nd. My computer is 2 years old and everything in it is OEM. Needless to say, it "ain't up to the task" very well. The importing, rendering, and burning leaves a lot to be desired (4 hrs to make a 1 1/2 hr dvd other software). So, I'm trying to decide if I should buy a new computer (price is an object) or just upgrade. I don't do any gaming or anything of that nature. Strictly video from my JVC HD camcorder. I'm pretty sure that trying to get a computer already configured would be out of my reach, so I'm looking for some expert advice on upgrade components.
I'm positive I need a new gaphics/video card but not sure which way to go. I've researched Nvidia and the Gforce n240 or 550 seems a good choice. However in the Help Me Choose link on their site, nothing comes up when I enter my computer info (price, power, nbr of slots).
I also think I would probably need a new processor and power unit.
Any ideas on the card?
Any ideas on a processor? Intel i3, i5; Intel Pentium; AMD Phenom; dual core; etc?
What about power?
Basically what I'm looking to do is speed-up the processing of videos. I've included my DxDiag info in the attachs (zip files). My computer is an HP s5310f, 4gb ram,600gb hd. I'm running Win 7, IE8, Norton 2011.
Any suggestions that won't have me asking Ben Bernanke for a federal bailout greatly appreciated.

Hi boong,

Just wondering: have you actually experienced symptoms of insufficient system resources while testing PowerDirector?

My computer is older than yours, configured quite modestly, and I haven't had any restricting problems with my hardware. I don't make discs though. That's something I can't report on.

As a matter of fact, I only see insufficient power when I replay resolution 1080/50 progressive (I'm in Europe) using for example VLC Media Player; gets jerky. No such problems with interlaced videos or in PowerDirector...

No, I really haven't noticed any problems so far. I did do a photo show and it came out quite good.
Right now, I'm working on putting together a short video using the clips from 6 1/2 hrs of video from
my trip to Laos. Up to this point, I've added chapters, transitions, a beginning and ending menu. I've
only saved it and will be going back a little later to produce/burn.
One thing I did notice is, when I click on a clip in the media room, then play it in the preview screen, it
seems to have some waves in it. Same if I play the movie that I have edited, up to a point. Don't know
if that will show-up in the finished product or not.
I will be back, after I put it on disc and see what I have, and give an update.

If you are not getting the ultra version, then I assume you are not working with high definition. In that case you should be Ok. I am not familiar with your graphics card, but if you feel that you need to upgrade, that is one way to get a little better performance without replacing the whole system. Make sure you get one that is supported by PD to get the best advantage. __________________________________

Just wanted to thank Jaime-esque and CubbyHouseFilms for the responses.
I suppose I should try the PD Ultra as my camcorder is HD w/Dolby. Hadn't crossed my mind to see if Ultra had
a free trial.
I also appreciate the tutorial links. Quite eye-opening. Opens a "can of worms" for me because, now I'm probably
going to try some of the things shown in them. Including photoshows w/video hadn't crossed my mind, but I like
to try new things. I'll definitely hold off until I have a better grasp of the intricacies of PD 10. Anyway, you have
opened a couple new doors for me.
Will keep you posted on how I'm doing. Trying to find appropriate background music right now. Then I'll go ahead
and produce/burn to see what I end-up with.

Well, I just completed a project and it came out pretty good. Took long time to burn but otherwise, satisfied.
Only one thing that has me puzzled. After I produced it, then clicked on burn in 2D, I got the message that
the project was larger than the disc that was inserted. Couldn't understand that as the project was only 1:21
long and the disc was a 4.7gb. Burned it anyway and all came out ok.
Only one thing. Previous to the aforementioned, I was working on a different project and had it saved in my
videos folder under the library. Then, when I started the new project, I also saved it in the same folder with
a different name. Somehow, when I saved the 2nd one, it overwrote the 1st one. I know that happened because
when I tried to import the 1st project, I would get the error saying there was a problem and did I want to
browse, ignore, or ignore all. Whatever I chose, the 2nd project would load.
Gonna have to be more attentive to what I'm doing because now I'm back to square one on the 1st project. Jack

Two issues that I understand, video to 80 minutes would not fit on the DVD 4.7, this option because in HQ DVD only fit 60 minutes.
Another, you did not seek the files now his project is incomplete, look for the PD workbook where it saves the projects automatically every 10 minutes, the date and time should find a file. Pds (project) with almost all of your project original you only lost a maximum of 10 minutes of work.
I here sets the PD10 to save project every five minutes

FYI - a 4.7 Gb DVD will typically hold an HD video clip (AVCHD) of anywhere from 40 to 65 minutes. The total time is determined by the complexity of the videos being rendered. Win 10, i7

Thank you play video for your response. I wasn't really looking for one but it is nice to know others are looking.
I believe you are mistaken on the 60 mins in a dvd. 4.7gb is surely more than 60 minutes. I've burned many DVDs
that go up to 2 hrs.
I understand that PD 10 is supposed to save the projects every 10 minutes. That is not the problem. The problem is
when I elected to Save Project As (under file tab) on the 2nd project, I inadvertently selected the 1st project as the
file name to be saved. Therefore, when I got the message "file already exists, do you want to replace?", I clicked
on yes, not realizing that I just saved the 2nd project under the 1st projects name. Ergo - 1st project overwritten
and gone. I know that to be factual, because when I went to my video folder and clicked on the title of the 1st
project, the second project is what opened - everytime.
Also, I lost more than 10 minutes because the entire 1st project is gone. So, back to square-one.

Hi

If you have the autosave function on, you might find the previous Save.

The folder with the auto saved projects is located in your C drive.

C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\CyberLink\PowerDirector\10.0\AutoSave\

Sort these files by date order

The 60 min I refered to was HD video, not SD. Your camcorder is capable of HD, so keep that in mind if you decide to venture into HD footage. For SD footage, you are correct. Win 10, i7

Just want to say thanks to all who are following this post. I'm very impressed with the responses. This is the best
forum that I'm a member of. All responses are very relavant and insightful and are providing me with info that
definitely help me in future projects.
Yes, I will be getting into HD a little later. Right now, being on a fixed income, I don't have much disposable
income but when I can, I'll be upgrding to PD Ultra.
