How to save original video data

I completed a DVD of a 7 day cruise shot in 1080p AVCHD. The video files on the camera filled a 36GB card, and take about the same amount of space on my PC. Because I created a MPEG-2 DVD, I would like to keep the original AVCHD files for future use in making a Blu Ray video. I presently lack a Blu Ray burner and player so I won't be doing this very soon. I need to erase the files on the camera card for re-use, and I would like to off load the files on my PC.

It would take about ( 4.7GB DVD's to archive the files which is cumbersome at best. Has anyone archived AVCHD files in an easier or more economical way? Can these be "zipped" and retrieved without loss?

I am looking forward to the day when DVD is extinct and Blu Ray is the standard, but it seems to be taking a long time for prices to drop to "consumer" levels...

I use External USB hard drives. And sometimes burn DVD, DL DVD or Blu-Ray disks.
A single layer BD disk is 25 GB.

The External hard drive is the same file as on your computer, just exported.
