Projects from DeLuxe work in Ultra?

Can projects created in the Deluxe or trial versions be worked on in the Ultra version?

In the latest episode of my long-running effort to obtain a working *paid* copy of PD 10 from Cyberlink (other than the trial version, which worked fine), a Cyberlink tech rep sent me links to a downloadable version of the paid Ultra version. This was Cyberlink's second attempt to send a downloadable paid version which works, and it succeeded - except for one thing: I can't import or play any of the projects I made in the trial version, which I think was a 32 bit version, while the paid Ultra is a 64 bit version.

Each time I try to import a previous project so I can work on it further, I get an error message that "an error occurred trying to open this file", and I'm prompted to"browse" (but I'm already at the location of the file) "ignore", or "ignore all". If I "ignore all" the project tries to open, but in the PD time line all the clips are just black. I can see the ideograms indicating that I've previously worked on each clip, but otherwise there's nothing.

Everything else seems to work - importing files, editing, the preview player, producing, burning - but not importing previously made projects. I made only a dozen or so short projects in the trial version, so it wouldn't be an impossible task to re-do them in the paid Ultra version - and let's face it, they're not exactly great art. They're also burned to discs, so they're not completely lost. But if they can be converted somehow, so I could work on them further in Ultra, that would be nice.

Thanks - Bill Hansen

Yes, you can open projects made in the Deluxe version in the Ultra version, you can use the project file made in the trial version also.

The full paid version of Powerdirector Ultra will open just about any previous PD project file. If you get the window asking to browse or Cancel, choose to browse, and choose the video.

The PDS file does not record the actual video, just the location of the video, if the location does not match, you get the window asking you to browse, (PD is asking where are these videos).

Warning - long post.

Thanks for your reply Carl. It looks like I still don't have a working copy of PD 10, other than the trial version, which will run out in another 3 weeks. The paid version of Deluxe (for which they sent me a link, to download) wasn't so deluxe; it was not fully functional, as Cyberlink tech support confirmed during a phone call.

I have to assume that Ultra works the same as the trial version and the same as the Deluxe version; when you want to bring a saved project back into the program, you go to File/Open project, then in the folder where your project is saved, you click on the project ideogram to Open it. The project itself, not the files from which the project was made, should open in the library, and you can pull it down to the time line.

Is there some other way in Ultra?

I was incorrect when I wrote that projects created in the currently installed paid Ultra version will open again in my copy of PD Ultra. They don't. I looked too quickly at the PD Library when opening those projects, and I didn't pull them down into the time line - careless of me. The only things I was pulling back into the program were the original files, not the project itself after edits, transitions, etc.

My copy of Ultra works normally in most respects; it edits the files, produces a short video, and it burns the project to disc. The resulting discs will play normally. It will save the project - or at least I can see the file name I gave to the project, with the appropriate ideogram, back in the folder where I saved it. But I can't bring the saved project itself back into PD 10 Ultra.

This is unlike either the trial version or the partly functioning (paid) Deluxe PD 10 they allowed me to download.

Do you have any suggestions for something else I might try, to get projects back into the Ultra program? If not, I will phone PD tech support again on Monday, not hoping for much.

The only think I have seen with Power Director 10 Ultra is when I open a project that I have edited and made a move. If I go back and open it up becasue I change the name of the video file it render it will say can't find it. I hit the ignore and it loads with all my edited files. I have no ideal why it would want the video file I had made the day before has long has it has the source files in place. I have never work with a video editing progam that wants the video I have alreay render. because If I'm going to change something I want it working with the files that came out of the camera. That's why you should PACK your projects..... It puts every video or pic you used on the timeline into a folder that you have set its default location....

Carl is right in having PD "browse"for your pics and videos when it says it cant find them.... NEVER delete any of your stuff until you get a final product. But when everything is in the same folder to start with, a lot of your problems are solved. even if you don't pack your project, put ALL of you project video and pictures in a folder you can find easy enough. Make it your DEFAULT save folder. When you save your project by hitting the save button, you do not actually save your video or pics. You only save your project configuration. The pics and video in your library are only thumbnails of they stuff with links to their location.

PD 10 will load any project made from a previous version.... just do a search for *.pds on your C:\ drive and you should find you project files..... they should load, you may have to tell it where your "stuff" is when you tell it to browse after it tells you it cant find them..... the only exception is if you did a clean slate uninstall which may have deleted your old projects. Another reason to have all you stuff in a folder of your choice, not PD. Including packing your project.

Bill,

Not sure what you are trying to say here. A project saved in PD10 will open again in PD10 anytime. I open and close my projects many times in an hour, if they are complicated projects, or if I want to test produce a portion of the project.

To open my projects I go to: File/Recent Projects/'Desired project'or
File/Open Project/'In Open window' navigate to the proper folder and select the desired .pds file.

This opens the project, loads the media to the library and sets up the time line like I last left it. PD10 and all versions of PD that I have used have done this without fail.

When you produce your project, PD will put the produced file into the library. But, it leaves the time line the way you have it, with your edits and other effects in the various tracks.

Producing or burning the project does not change the project in any other way.

Michael,

The reason it is looking for the file is because it automatically puts the produced file in the media library. If you do not want the produced file to load the next time you open the project, you should remove the file from the media library before you close the project.

You can remove it with a right click and 'Remove from library'

Ultra is working normally now. I had a longer note, explaining what the trouble was - but I guess it was too long and would not be accepted by the forum. - Bill Bill Hansen

Carl - I'll keep the attachment option in mind, if I need to send longer posts. The resolution to the problem I had with Ultra is almost too embarrassing to admit. Ultra just needed me to shut down the computer and leave it alone for a while. Apparently restarts and even a cleanup by C Cleaner were not enough. [The other thing is that there's something magical about me bitching and moaning about something - right after I post something like that, the problem often resolves itself.]
