Thank you Carl 312, RobAC, and Playsound for your suggestions!
Carl, I have noticed that a new project does not have this issue. However, I'm wondering if it might develop given a little time . . . If I need to re-create this project, it will take 10 or 12 hours; its over an hour long. (I tried cutting and pasting into a new project -- and the issue persists.)

It seems we have proven that there is nothing wrong with your Powerdirector installation.
There is one suggestion I can give that may eliminate having to recreate your long project.
If you can find a auto saved project that is without the problems, you will save some time in recreating the missing parts.
Auto Save location for Powerdirector 12
It is a Hidden location. Change your Folder Options to show Hidden folders and files
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\CyberLink\PowerDirector\12.0\AutoSave
You should always use Save Project AS and give the project a incrementing number. That way you can go back to an earlier time.
If you just Save, you are overwriting your previous Project file, If anything goes wrong, you have no fall back.
