Transparent Background

I've tried to use the chroma key feature in my PD10 Ultra but it doesn't seem to be much better than previous versions. It just doesn't key out the green screen close to the subject and there's always a ghost of something surrounding it, no matter what adjustments I make. I've looked at some of the samples that others have done which are considered to be well done and even they have ghostly background remnants floating around the subject.

Mind you, I know it isn't my green screen background causing the problem: I can import the exact same file into my Adobe After Effects and the background is eliminated perfectly using keylight 1.2: no green outlines and no floating ghosts.

I prefer working in PowerDirector over After Effects for as much of my editing as possible because the GUI is so much nicer in PD. And, I don't mind using After Effects just to do the chroma keying and can export the file with an alpha channel (transparent background.) What I've been trying to do, however, is to import the video file with the alpha channel from After Effects into PowerDirector. For some reason PD refuses to recognize the alpha channel on import and what is supposed to be a transparent background comes through as black, or else PD says that the format isn't correct or the file is damaged and doesn't allow import at all.

Am I doing something wrong? What format should I export from After Effects with alpha channel so that PD can import it with a transparent background?

Thanks in advance!

PD does not work with Alpha channels, you have me wondering now if some of my green-screen videos would have been better with another software...

Hey Barry,

Thanks for the feedback. Cool video!

How does PowerDirector not handle alpha channels if it has a chroma keying capability?

I ended up creating my video entirely in AfterEffects because I wanted my background to be keyed out well. I really would like to see PD's chroma keying capabilities improve because I really do prefer working with it over AfterEffects. If nothing else, I wish PD could import alpha transparent layers rendered from other programs.

Here's a link to the video I produced for some old Air Force buddies of mine from 40 years ago:

No ghosting!
