Is it possible in PD9 to take a .wmv file, cut out major portions, then save as .wmv file without reformatting it?

Some call this a direct stream copy.

If PD does not do it can you recommend an inexpensive product that will?

Thanks

That's not what I think of when I think of direct stream copy, but I think you are looking for PowerDirector's SVRT function. I don't know that it works for WMV. I suggest you try it and see if it meets your needs. __________________________________

When you say "reformatting" it, are you referring to editing the clip and then producing it as something other than a .wav file? You can easily edit the clip, click produce, and make a .wav file again.

Perhaps re-formating is not the correct term, others use re-coding. The end effect is you are re-codifying the clip and therefore you will loose some quality.

The big compliant of mine is even if you same as .wmv again it takes more space, from 30 to as much as 300% more. So you take a 100 meg clip and cut 30% and end up with a larger file.

If it is cut, bad parts taken out, and not re-coded or re-formated you end up with the same quality as original, and just shorter.

Curt,
There is a software program name avidemux that can do the clipping you want to do without the "reformatting" as you called it. It is a little confusing at first, but really isn't that hard to work with. The problem is everyone in their forum thinks you need to be a genius to use their product and are not very helpful or friendly and it doesn't have 1/100th all the "toys" that PD does. I use it to do clipping work only and use PD to do all my real editing. It is a free download and easily found. Once you download it, if you can't figure it out, shoot me a private message and I'll try to help you walk through it.
Now I just have to hope our illustrious moderator does not cut my head off for bringing up another product here. LOL

Cheers!
Kevin R.
