Is the Kaleidoscope effect supposed to work with photos on the timeline?

Yes,
photos and video, by dragging it (the effect) directly onto the clip, or placing it into the EFFECT line.
Tested on DM1z.

It doesn't work for me either way: dragging unto clip or placing it on the effects timeline.
I have just begun testing most of the effects to see how they work and many of them don't.
I think I am going to uninstall and re-install PD9. This was suggested to me for another issue.

Actually it works with a still shot but all you see is the deformed image as it is a distorted view. The kaleidoscope view itself does not move. A video works because it has movement.

I never thought of the movement aspect with the video Bubba, thanks.
I do get the effect in the still images, just no movement. I have to make some setting adjustments with the effect on still images to get a suitable picture.

Even with a still image, key frames can be set with the kaleidoscope effect to generate "movement". If the default effect is applied, as Bubba says, all you get is a distorted image.
