PowerDirector is Freezing My Computer
[Post New]
PowerDirector freezes the computer if I'm not running just it. Is this normal? I've had to cold reboot 4 times since I uploade PD less then a week ago. Anyone know how many other programs can be open before PD gets mad and freezes everything up? Ctr/ALT/Del won't even work. I've set my autosave to 5 minutes because of the freezing.

Here's my details...I'd attach them rather the paste them here, but I don't see a way to attach them as a file...

Nightowl: There is a blue button under the text entry screen, beside the blue "Options" button and says "Attachments." Click that to add attachments to posts.

I have looked at your system specs and while you have a lot of MB ram, you are shy on CPU power, but the graphics is the major concern to me. Looks like you have "on-board" video, which will rob system RAM. Moreover, you are running an x64 OS, so your RAM is automatically "halved", like running 3 GB RAM on an x32 OS.

I suspect that your hardware is the source of some of your problems. Then, of course, you need the latest and greatest drivers, codecs, and QuickTime.

You might want to consider upgrading. PD9 is much more resource-intensive and less forgiving of inadequate platforms than previous versions were.

Have a great day.

When you are asked to provide a DXDIAG you go the following link and do part "B". Your posted specs are NOT what we are looking for as they tell us nothing. The specs on the box of your computer mean nothing. The DXDIAG shows us how your computer is configured as it runs.

Bubba: I don't want to hijack this thread - I already tried Dafydd's patience today ( ), but how do you tell from the dxdiag whether QuickTime is installed?

I have QT on my computer, but I find no mention of it directly in my dxdiag file. Tried searching "Quicktime", "Apple", and "QT", as well as closely examining my dxdiag. Tried searching the web. Must be some sort of secret code ... ! Am I, as a mere member, to be considered worthy to learn "the secret?"

I would have mentioned that to the user if I had known what I was looking for? Confess to still being a relative newbie to the world of PD9 and Windows 7 baffles me. Give me DOS 3.3 and I could tell you just about everything. It's all gotten SO complex! Hard on us old grandparents!

Thanks, Bubba. Have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

I am not Bubba, but in windows 7 the Quicktime does not show in dxdiag if in 64 bit mode.

Quicktime does show in 32 bit.

As to how you know if Quicktime is installed, in Notepad (which opens for a Text file) Click the Edit menu > Find, type in the search box "quicktime", click Find Next.

If Quicktime is installed find will hit about three instances of Quicktime in the dxdiag.txt file. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

I swear that attachments button was not there when I was looking for an attachment button!

Ok, for now upgrading is out of the question since I just got this computer new 3 months ago. At that time the new Canon T3i hadn't come out and I was quite happy not knowing a thing about video. Then the T3i came out with their swivel screen and I just had to have it. Way back in the day I had a Nikon 990 and 995 and they had the swivel screens. When the DSLRs came out I had to give up my swivel screen and finally was able to go back to it.

Along with the camera came the ability to take decent video, leading to Power Director 9. If I knew then what I know now I would probably have looked for a Power Director 8 on Ebay and bypassed 9 for awhile.

Guess I'll be making sure everything is off while I'm working in Power Director and hope for the best.

Thanks guys! Now if I can just figure out my audio problem with youtube.... Dustie

nightowl123, don't feel too bad you among the many who come hear sucked in by the camera makers now supplying HD video. They should put a disclaimer on their cameras "Computer may need to be upgraded to edit video from this camera."

Regarding the attachment icon you need to use the "post reply" button instead of the quick reply box. A design fault with this forum, it traps everyone. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

You MUST upgrade the graphic to run PD9. Your gateway machine has a PCI Express x16 slot available that will allow the addition of a video card with memory. Since this is a compact machine, you must verify the length of the video card this machine will accept.

You only have a dual core processor, but if you update the video card, you should be fine for basic editing.

I could do that. How to I verify the length of the video card this machine will accept and is it hard to put in? Where do I buy the video card? Will Amazon.com have them...they are who I use most to purchase items on the net.

Robert, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who didn't see the attachment button. I'll be sure to use the Post reply rather then quick reply when I have an attachment. Tricky that one....

Please also note the limitations of your 220W power supply.

Quote from a reviewer:-
"Graphics are handled by the typical Intel GMA X4500MHD found in just about every Intel based desktop platform these days. It is an integrated graphics processor that provides sufficient performance for basic use and high definition media streaming. It lacks any real significant 3D graphics performance to handle even casual 3D PC gaming. There is an internal PCI-Express graphics card slot for adding in an aftermarket graphics card but there are some severe limitations. First, the slim case design requires a half-height card to be installed. Second, the low wattage power supply pretty much limits the use of only the low level graphics cards not really meant for PC gaming."

Thanks for that Adrian. I'm really not a gamer nor looking to make long videos or anything. What I am interested in is creating small 30 to 60 second videos for Microstock Footage, and perhaps some Short After Effects videos also for Microstock. Check out the Videos and the After Effects on Pond5 Stock Footage, www.pond5.com/index.php ref=Dustie, to see what I'm wanting to do. I make a bit of money each month uploading images to microstock sites, and now would like to branch into uploading footage for additional income. Will a low level video card with memory added to my computer help me with this do you think?

Thanks!

Sorry, I haven't kept up to date with video cards since I built this system a while ago. Other folk may be able to offer better suggestions.

OK, now i'm really getting frustrated. I originally wrote the following to Gateway support...

I'd like to add an audio card with memory to this computer. However, I've been told that, because it's a compact unit I'd need to verify the length of the PCI Express 16X slot to know what kind of Video card will work in this computer. I also need to know if you carry the kind of Video card with memory that will work best in this situation.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Their first respons was that Gateway does not recommend making any changes to the factory specifications that that if you do, the computer is no longer under warrenty.

I wrote back that didn't answer my quesiton and what point was an empty PCI Express 16X slot if it can't be used? That I still needed to know what size Video card would fit into that slot.

They answered back nearly the same answer, that it's not recommended I make any changes to the computer and if I do it will no longer be under warrenty.

I'm getting really frustrated now. The names of the people who answered are both Indian names, so they obviously are from a call center overseas. I don't think they are understanding what I'm asking at all.

Sadly, it's the only way I can find to get ahold of anyone at Gateway. I'd love to upgrade the Vid card, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to, not knowing what my computer will take. If Gateway's not willing to help, I might not even be able to get help with how to put the Video card in.

GRRRRRRR

Hi Dustie,

Just take your computer down to your local computer shop. They will be able to help you and even fit it into your computer if you don't know how to.

I can understand Gateway saying they do not suggest anything as they have tested their system to work and don't guarantee it if you alter it.

Just be aware as Adrian stated a 220Watt power supply is pretty low so you won't be able to go with a high powered video card which usually require a power supply in the 400W range.

Cheers

Thanks Robert! Good Advice! ;

I just wonder why Gateway even puts in empty slots then, if they don't recommend you add anything to the computer? Dustie

How about this audio card on NewEgg? I could take it to my nearest computer guru and have them put it in if it would work. I'll bet he'd not charge much. Dustie
