Slideshow quality

Have read some of the past posts on slideshow quality. Post say quality of using hi resolution pictures produces poor quality slideshow. Did not see any definitive answers to the problem.

I see the same thing is my slideshow, but not sure how much to expect. The end result is noticeably softer than the original.

So what precautions can one take to get a slideshow to be as close as possible to the original pictures?

Do transitions (like a fade) alter the quality?

I want to produce this to my computer, so what file format should it be produced in for highest quality? I tried mpeg-2 but it showed the soft images.

Did you? Render it to a file? If so what format? Produce a DVD? I make TONS of slide shows with pictures and only have a problem when the picture provided to me is one printed on crappy paper and I have to scan it.

I am sure by now that you know about the preview settings. What is you preview resolution set at? Depending on your system the higher preview resolution you go the slower your preview gets, also the lower your preview resolution gets the grainier the preview gets, but runs smoother.

Transitions and effects always look fine on my produced projects. I am in the middle of one now that will have over 300 photos, about half from camera and half scanned, over 250 titles with motion, and about 300 transitions.

ADD:

Almost forgot, some times the provided to me photos are low quality to start with. Even with the higher quality, if you crop one and make the crop the same size as the original you will lose some resolution. After a while you wll just learn how far you can stretch it before it looks grainy.

The show I am making right now will be shown on a 50 foot screen in front of a couple thousand people the first Thursday (graduation) in June. (a annual project)

I will render it to a avi and mp4 and then process the one that looks the best. No blue ray here, but might keep it mastered in AVCHD as a m2ts file now that we can easier now. I keep the shows for 2 years before purging in case I need to make a copy for whatever reason. Just deleted 2008 today. This will be my 10th year doing the Graduation show.

Bubba,

Thanks for the reply. I am really new to this. I use HQ digital images, put in my transitions, like fade, then select Produce. Have tried various formats, such as mpeg-2 and AVI they all have about the same softness.

I have tired with different preview settings, but that only affects how it looks when I play it before rendering.

I am only saving it to the hard drive so no complications with burning a DVD.

Perhaps I am expecting too much. How much "softness" (fuzzyness) do you see between the original and the rendered file?

What do you do?

Well for some reason my last post did not save after it "saved"

We all know that to get HD is a simple process. HD "in" is rendered or produced to m2ts files or produced to blue ray discs (still m2ts files) equals HD "out". When you burn to DVD your vob files are just another name for mpeg4. Lower resolution.

I play with the HD sample files available to us all the time. But when I save to m2ts, it is not HD, just my slide show saved in m2ts format. Mostly done just for practice.

But even though my photos are not always HQ, as I must use what I end up with , when I produce to DVD my transitions, effects always look good.

I just made a ACHVD file using 4 of the sample clips that we can download. used 4 transitions and 4 titles with motion and WOW was it visually good. transitions perfect and the title text and motion is amazingly sharp and crisp. But is was only 20 seconds and 150 megs in size.

I do not own a HD camera. (unless you count that $5 key chain camera that actually takes good video and pics)
