Problems with stuttering HD Video during edits

Not posted before but I have a problem and would welcome some help and advice please.

I have a Panasonic HDC-TM700 and have recorded some videos (20min long) in the full HD mode (1920x1080 1080/50p). Perhaps foolishly.

I am using Power Director 8 (8.00.1930) on a Toshiba laptop running Intel core2 Duo CPU T750 2.00Ghz, with 3Gb RAM on 32 bit Vista. I have over 40G free on my C drive (where the OS is) and over 70G free on my E drive (Where teh data is).

Whilst previous videos have editied nicely this one will stutter badly when I try to play it in Edit mode making it hard to even choose where to cut it.

Also when I hover over the clip it says "Shadow file generating", but I am not sure what this means and how long that might take. It also says the type is H.264 AVC, bit rate 24.71, Resolution 1920x1080, 5-fps. The file size is 3.41G.

My Questions:

1) Will I be able to edit these clips with PD8 and this configuration?

2) Do I need to wait until the "Shadow file" is generate. If so how long might that be, and how will I know it is complete? (The Patience answer)

3) If this mode is problematic, is there any sense if doing an immediate "Produce" on the raw clip to produce it into a lower spec format that can be edited? If so what format shout I use as the target?

4) Is there another option available to be able to edit these clips?

5) What would be the better format to use to record in the first place?

Advice appreciated please as these clips withe be hard to replace.

Many thanks Panasonic TM_700,

Hi Phil

Welcome to the forum

1. Yes you can edit these clips - HOWEVER update to the latest patch 3022. AND ensure all footage is on the same drive (C drive is the best).

2. Uncheck the 'shadow edit files' box in the preferences - your computer should be able to cope without this function and ignore the warning.

3. See the above

4. See the above

5. See the above.

Good luck and let us know how you went.

Thanks CubbyHouse

That is reassuring.

I realised after the posting that I was on a lower version so am upgrading now.

One question: Which tab is the "Shadow edit files" box under in the Edit/preferences option . I have looked carefully through them all and cannot see it.

The only one that comes close is one under GENERAL that says:

"Enable file processing to speed up high definition video editing". Is that the one? Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Thanks for this. V helpful.

Have upgradred to 3022 and switched off the shadow file processessing.

Now , when I run the video from the main time line (or in multi-trim) the sound is continuous but the images have trouble catching up, they stutter and pause an certain points, never synchronising with the speech.

If I pause it and then unpause, the pictures are synched for a second or two and then lag behind.

I can at least get the edit points from the sound, but its not ideal.

Any other ideas appreciated

Hi Phil

I too have minor HD stuttering.

I recently updated my graphic drivers which provided some improvement.

If I was you I would consider posting a diagnostic file - see the start of the forum to see how to this. This will give other video editors better 'qualified' than me a 'snapshot' of your system.

Don't give up - the solution is out there somewhere. Happing editing

Hi Phil

On second thoughts

Try producing your RAW files first in a format as close to the original as possible THEN import this file into PD to work on.

This workaround was suggested by Cranston - a PD guru.

These last two posts crossed)

I am still having problems with this. I have run through teh whole video looking for timing and edit points.

I am now trying to use Multi-Trim now to edit out some specific sections. The video will not play smoothly at all. Not even teh sound is smooth - it stutters from half word to half word and it is impossible to find a specific point in the clip.

It is unusable and impossible to edit it properly.

I will try the suggestion of processing the clip and then editing it.

Hi Phil,

Something about editing full HD video on a laptop in my opinion it usually does not end well, just not enough power.

Something to try, shoot a 5-10 second test clip, try and edit the clip. Then turn on shadow files and make sure you wait till they are processed. Then try and edit, if the editing process goes smoother compared to editing without shadow files it will confirm that your laptop is not powerful enough to edit full HD 1920X1080 video.

The problem can be if all you are doing is dropping the HD video on the timeline, cutting out something then producing, it may work. Although as soon as you start adding transitions, special effects is where you need the extra horsepower of a faster chip and dedicated graphics card. Thanks Robert, I will try that.

I tried simply producing the video straight away without any editing, so I could edit that later, but the produce process completely slugged my pc.

A question: If I were tro try producing in another format close to the existing one, but more ameanable to editing, what format would you recommend?

I have tended to go for "portable MP4" but I have a feeling that might be a mistake and I would be better using either "Mpeg-2" or "H264 AVC".

What would you recommend? (I'm a bit in teh dark on these various formats)

Full HD is trouble, even for a fairly powerful laptop like mine.
And 1440x1080 can be difficult, too, partly depending on the bitrate and any shenanigans I add (FX, etc). Often I convert to a 720, either Mpeg2 or AVC.

Hi Phil,

I just noticed in your first post that you are trying to edit what is effectively Blu-ray quality video, that is 1920X1080 at 24.71 Mbps, that is a lot to throw at a dedicated desktop computer let alone a laptop. The 24.71 Mbps is a hell of a lot of information to process. I shoot my videos at 12Mbps and if I use 1280X720 my GoPro HD shoots it at 8Mbps. So you see you can drop the Mbps way down and still get reasonable video.

To answer your question as Barry said Mpeg2 or AVC is a good choice. I produce mine to AVC H.264, but this format is very intensive to process.

Bottom line is I would record at 1280X720 30p to at least give your laptop a chance to edit the footage.

Let us know how you went with letting the shadow files finish, although I used to use shadow files in another program a couple of years ago and for a 20 minute video they take hours and hours AND hours to complete. That is why I advised to do a 5-10 second clip just to see if they help or not.

Cheers

Hi

I agree with the other members here.

In your first you say that the 'data' is on the E drive.

I assuming these are the media files, If so can start another project with these files on the same drive as PD.

In relation to what file type to produce to in my camera have similar raw footage to yours and I burn mine direct to BD and I then archive a produced MPEG2 under the Profile name/Quality drop down of (HD) MPEG-2, 1080i.
I've also used BD1920x1080 and the exception of the file size, I cannot see the difference (view via LCD/LED HD panel. Happing editing

Phil, I have the same camera as you. I produce to AVC H.264 and the final video is stunning. When I produce to MPEG2 there is too much "Alias" (jagged lines when there is any movement in the video).

Dear all

Thanks for your help - here is the sitution

1) I clearly bought a camera that was unnecessarily expensive ; and got carrried away with the settings!

2) Doing an experiment I discovered that Power Director and my laptop will be fine in edit mode with 1080 HE and HX, but the images stutters in edit mode with HG and HA as well as 50p. (The sound is fine)

3) I have been able to convert the original videos to mpeg-4 format. I would have tried an AVCHD if a) I had seen the comments earlier and b) my experiment to see how long they took to convert had not involved AVCHD 1920 which was taking longer to produce that the MPEG 4's. At some later date I shall try the 720 AVCHD format as recommended.

4) So now I have a set of Mpeg4 videos which i hope I can edit into the finished videos. They seem to be far smaller than the originals which helps.

5) On the shadow files, I did switch it off. I never saw an orginal file finish its shaow file creation so I can't answer the question as to whether having those complete made a difference.

6) On the "Transitions" question. I have not got as far as trying to include any transitions yet. Hopefully with a simpler format such things won't be a problem.

Thanks for advice. You've all been very helpful

I have some other PD questions but won't pollute this thread by changing topic

Phil
