I use a GoPro for my hanggliding videos. The biggest tip I can give you to get the best quality is to use Fix/Enhance, then Video enhancement set at 1/4 to 1/2. This increases the contrast, saturation and sharpness to great effect.

I have found that the raw footage out of the camera is a bit washed out. Maybe not as noticeable in your colourful footage but in my footage of muted colours it does show up.

Your footage looks very good. I produce mine to H.264 AVC 15,000-20,000 bit rate. I have tested full Blu-ray of 24,000 bit rate and found it really did not improve much over 15-20,000 bitrate other than making the video larger in mb's.

You can check out some of my hang gliding videos in the link below in my signature.

Cheers

Very nice video. I produce mine for YouTube to the Apple iPod HD quality, but for the highest quality I would agree with Robert. I haven't found a setting that works for SVRT. __________________________________

Robert2 S.. I use the GoPro for microlighting video. The GoPro records at 12,000 why do you render at 15,000-20,000? Have you tried 12,000 and can you see a difference?

Hi,

I hear what you are saying. I actually record at 1280X920 which is 4:3 aspect ratio to get the widest view possible as I mount the camera about 1 foot off my left shoulder. I then stretch it to 16:9 because I really don't like the black bars on my screen. You are definitely right that it records at a maximum 12,000.

During my testing I found if I produce to 1920X1080 at 15,000-20,000 when I view my videos on youtube at 1280X720 (takes too long and uses too much download to view 1920X1080) I get a better quality. If I upload 1280X720 15,000-20,000 the quality is not as good as the 1920X1080. It seems like youtube produces a better 1280X720 videos when it has a 1920X1080 video to start with.

Now you have to know I am fairly pedantic with the quality of my videos and like to squeeze every drop of quality out of my videos. My old Panasonic TZ7/SZ3 records 1280X720 at 17,000 straight out of the camera.

The thing is with increasing the bit rate you will get a slight increase as long as you don't go overboard. I did do some testing with my TZ7 17,000 footage all the way up to Blu-ray quality of 24,000 and all it really did was make the video huge in mbs.

As I mentioned earlier the biggest tip I have found with Gopro HD video is to use Video enhancement to 1/4-1/2

Cheers

Like you I think quality is paramount, youtube is a secondary concern as I render primarily to view on my PC or TV. I also want to keep the file size sensible you I render at 12,000. I can't see how rendering higher would produce a better video if the original file was at 12,000. There might be some other reasons I'm not aware of. I'm expect there will be some loss after all you are re-compressing an already compressed file so maybe upping the bitrate might minimise loss. I just wondered if you had ever done a 20,000/12,000 comparison with Gopro 12,000 footage.

I have done a 12,000/15,000, 20,000 and 24,000.

When I did the test you could choose a variable bit rate, this was when I chose 15-20,000 and found it a better result than the default 12,000. With the newer builds you can no longer choose a variable bit rate.

Now I am talking with my footage noticing the ocean surface and tree foliage crisper with the extra bit rate. The average person would not even notice it they would be too focused on the overall flying footage.

My advice I give to everyone as everyone's preferences are different. Shoot or cut out 10 seconds of video out of a larger video and produce it to different formats, bit rates till you find one that suits your needs.

Which goPro do you have. I have the Motorsport, which is the 1080p model. I have a raw video file on my desktop that I opened with media Info and Gspot. both said it is 15.2kbps. Doesn't change the question you are asking, but I am curious. __________________________________

You are right Jamie, 1080 is 15Mbits but the 920 is 12Mbits. With 920 being smaller in physical size the actual quality of the video is the same as 1080.
