Made Switch to 64 Bit PD 9 Ultra

So I have been a long time user of PD 7, then PD8, now PD9.

I have an i7 920 desktop, 12 GB RAM, dual ATI 4870 cards in crossfire, ASUS motherboard, windows vista ultimate 64 bit
and Catalyst 10.11 with 10.11 Avivo package and OpenCL.

I turned all hardware acceleration on, not a problem for me to select hardware acceleration (it also seems that PD9 supports openCL parralell processing acceleration of rendering.)
I also have the fddshow codecs installed.

Anyway, the first thing I did is open up a 38 minute AVCHD movie project I made in PD8 a few months ago.

Manipulating the project was not percievably faster than PD8. I did like the HD preview, except I was getting choppiness in the "full HD preview mode" (I dont think I should with the amount of GPU/CPU resources I have). It got better when I enabled ATI parrallell processing acceleration (OpenCL), but still hiccups every 15-20 seconds under movie preview.

I decided to render the project for my blackberry, where the application immediately crashed. I tried running it without hardware acceleration (GPU) and it rendered.

Then I decided to do a full AVCHD render, but with custom settings (15500 kbps average bit rate, 17500 kbs max bit rate on AVCHD), and that immediately crashed.

I the re-rendered it in the standard AVCHD setting (1920 x 1080) and it did do it in about 39 minutes, about the same time to render as when I had PD8 (this is understandable, since the GPUs used for hardware accelerated encoding hadn't changed).

So, so far, I don't notice any appreciable speed increase (although I have not used much magic motion, transitions, editing yet), and it did pause several times while manipulating the previous project a little.

As far as memory usage, total memory usage never exceeded 3.2G (I have 12GB DDR3). Under produce of AVCHD, I saw main processor loading of 25 to 100%, yet in the ATI Overdrive section, the GPU active percentage was mostly 0% (although I know it is using the GPU, since it does render faster with GPU acceleration on, although crashes sometimes).

Bottom line, there are still application crashes which tells me the exception handling hasn't been looked at that much for PD9, even though the base engine was moved to 64 bit (or perhaps when you fix a bunch of things, you break others?)

All in all, was it worth $70 for the upgrade? (I would rather pay $40 (instead of $70) and not get the bonus holiday pack)? Dont know yet if it was worth it. probably too expensive to upgrade at this time from PD8 because of my crashes... although the feature list is nice. I like how you can unlink the audio/video and move around, as well as displaying, in a more intuitive way, the transitions.

Overall, I give it a B or B-, due to the crashes and the high cost of upgrading. For $40 it is worth the upgrade I think.

I've just made the switch from PowerDirector 8 to PowerDirector 9 and I have to say, i'm far from enamoured with the new software, to the point where I have considered uninstalling it and putting version 8 back on. Projects have been tking me longer to compete because little shortcuts that were present in PD8 are seemingly no longer present in PD9, things such as being able to copy already created transitions to other areas on the timeline. Also, pasting a text overlay in the timeline greates gaps in the video clips which are not wanted. If these are simple novice errors then please somebody point out to me how I stop this from happening. I'm determined to persevere though and will be spending the rest of the night watching all the tutorials before I attempt to complete my next project, I have one coming up that I need to do fairly quickly. So far though, I'm a very long way from impressed if I'm honest, the speed increases aren't that great for me either, expected a little bit more from this than I've got so far really.

As I've posted elsewhere, it is worth pointing out that PD9 has introduced some very different "features" that require editors to re-assess the way they use the multiple tracks. Not all features will suit everyone and many beta testers took some time to work with the new possibilities before coming to a decision on how good or bad the feature was and if there were any workarounds.

PD9 is not a straight migration from PD8 with a few extras, there are some real differences, requiring some exploration. Of course, they may not suit everyone but, on the whole (having spent many, many hours on it) I'm coming to like it better than PD8.

That's not to say it hasn't still got some inexplicable (and really irritating) design features/function flaws but, as usual, it's a balancing act.

Cheers

Suppose the balance could always tip back to PD8 in that case then. Wonder what Cyberlink's refund policy is?

Gotcha, thanks. No good to me as I got mine via download. Looks like I'm screwed then

Your refund within the first 30 days doesn't make any difference if you bought via download or not.

Something I have noticed with copying and pasting the paste link doesn't show up when right clicking the mouse but you can still use the Control/V keyboard short cut.

Pity it doesn't work with the ctrl/c shortcut as well then. Well when I checked my order history, it said I had none. So couldn't set up a refund online. Don't know if anybody knows how else I'd go about it?

Unfortunately I have to agree with Alex.

PD9 appears to tick all the boxes with it's sleek adverts but in reality it is not up to the job it claims.

Sure when you double click the icon it opens quicker and new HD preview is OK. The wave editor is pretty cool, but that is where the fun stops.

Examples:

1. The application 'hangs' when importing rendered 1920x1080 files and mostly crashes.

2. Previous saved PIPS from PD8 are distorted

3. When moving between tracks there are lags and hangs and time outs and then it crashes.

4. The rendering of .mts files is no quicker than PD8.

I have not yet tried to burn to blu-ray and I probably won't.

Overall, I was so looking forward to this release but to be quite honest I am very disappointed 4 out of 10 from me

Cyberlink MUST do better and listen to the Beta testers. This release seems to be full of 'bugs'!

I, for one will go back to the 'safety' of PD8 v3022. At least it didn't 'freeze, crash, hang' as much.
