Panasonic, mts files and PD 8

Hi all,
Editing can be easy- and it can be difficult. As in all kinds of issues; the more you know (how), the more you'll know
you don't know! After quite some years, I've just invested in a new computer and a camera. My PC's DXdiag you'll see below. Camera: Panasonic HDC-SD600.
Well, it should be kind of point-and-shoot camera while in Automatic mode, but since I always edit clips, save clips
for different purposes in editing, I have to be able to edit the clips!
PD8 plays the mts files "just fine" on this computer, but putting a clip in timeline and run it from there, I have
some pixalation. Playing from library, it's ok.
Well. This camera has some options to choose from, and when you get in to the choices, it suddenly becomes a bit
more complicated. I promised Dafydd to do some testing, and I'm on it! - but I have to capture 1 clip at a time so I can
report things exactly. Therefore, I'll continue this thread tomorrow.

Well, continuing. This camera has a default setting : 1920x1080/50i. Adjusting in 4 modes, from 17Mbps to 5Mbps-
all VBR, calling it "recording mode and transfer rate" - I'm assuming this has to do also with (only?) sound.
Default is set 13Mbps. At least, this is what the manual says.
Recording format: AVC/H.264

Now, you can also record in 1080/50p, which I'm sampling tomorrow.
(It's odd that a camera like this only gives you choice between 1080/50i or 1080/50p)

I'm posting my dxdiag as a textfile ( Dafydd strictly tells me....), and posting 2 m2ts clips from this morning,
shot in 1080/50i, but in different modes.
SVRT info gives me green light when: 25fps /H.264AVC/AVCHD 1920x1080.
Light goes blue when changed to 30fps.

When placing in timeline, I get pixalation. (Look at the ground in the clips)
As I said, I will do the 1080/50p tomorrow, but can anyone confirm this so far? Kevin?

I'll take a look.

Members: It is easy to "flick" between NTSC and PAL in PD. Please test Nina's sample files on your systems and post your results.

Here is my testing, which interestingly since I upgraded to Win7 64 bit i7 950 CPU and Nvidia 460 video card my videos do the same. I don't know if it is Win7 or Video card but PD did not do this under Vista 32bit and Nvidia 9800GT. I did notice that 1Nina has old video drivers, mine are updated with the latest drivers.

1. Play video from media room at full screen, no pixellation.

2. Drop video to timeline and play full screen, pixellation.

3. Produce video to H.264 1080, then do nothing other than go back to editing screen, the video on the timeline now plays full screen fine, no pixellation.

4. Does the same thing with 1Nina's panasonic videos or my Panasonic and Sanyo videos, so I don't think it is the video format.

Cheers

Thank you, Robert, for feedback. Have downloaded and installed latest driver.
Now; a camera's menu mostly makes sense regarding choices. You have the numbers, icons and letters.
For some reason, some things you have to dig in the manual for quite some time to solve what some things really
mean.
You'll notice from yesterday's clips it says 8.3.

Setting for 16:9 in videorecording has a total of 7 options in auto:
on one hand you have
HA, HG (default), HX and HE.

HA = priority quality of footage
HE = priority of time

On the other hand you have

13.3 M - which MEANS 4864x2736 ( which they have set to default)
8.3 M - which MEANS 3840x2160

and THEN you have 2.1 - which MEANS 1920x1080 !

So what I'm going to do later today is using HA/2.1/1080p and HG/2.1/1080p
and see where it takes me.

Moving on....in auto.
So- what this camera does when you want to shoot in 1080/50p - is shutting down the option of choices.
HA,HG,HX,HE blank out, and you are left with the 13.3M (it's not saying Mb/Mbps), 8.3M and 2.1M.

Well, I've tried the 1080/50p. No problem from computer- serious pixalation from timeline in PD8.
(I have produced and brought back to edit again, same result).
Produced also in H.264/25fps/AVCHD 720x576 - not good at all. SVRT gives blue light.

New clips in 1080/50i- shot in HA/2.1 and HG/2.1 - pixalation. "Best result" HG/2.1 1080/50i.

PD often freezes after rendering these short clips, have to close (do not get back to "edit") and start again.

Clips today are taken at 2 o'clock in mid day. This is what we get of light when it's cloudy, this time of year.

As a wrap-up (I'm tired and have a cold)-
I sent a couple of clips through FormatFactory to be Mp4. Still the same pixalation in timeline/PD8.
(This cannot be right, can it?)

Took a few of the un-produced clips in to Ad...Pr..e9.
No pixalation from timeline, not from the 1080/50i or 1080/50p.

I will produce some files from there another day, and we can possibly share a screen Dafydd.
Something has to be done, maybe?

This is all for now.
