Sound lagging

I'm using PD 8, and Windows Vista.

The sound is part of the actual video, but it lags behind when I'm watching it in PD. I thought maybe this would be corrected when I burned the final product, since there are just a lot of things going on when PD is playing your movie. Not true. The lag happened on the DVD as well. The original video doesn't lag at all. I played it on Windows Media Player just fine.

I didn't add the sound, it was already part of the video. I also didn't add anything special like effects, transitions, titles or anything like that. I even tried deleting the clips and then undoing the action to see if that fixed it.

It makes the people performing in my video look like they are lip-syncing which is not cool.

Any ideas?

Did you render to MPEG2 first, THEN burn a disc from the finished (rendered) file?
If you did, does the rendered file lag before you put it on a disc?
A disc burn from the original project timeline can be tough on a computer.

I think I did render to MPEG 2 first. I'll try it again to be sure though. And yes, the lag seemed to happen while I was watching the video as I created the project in the Edit section. I only thought it was happening because there was so much going on. It works fine to just watch it on Windows Media Player though. Doesn't really make sense.

I'll try the rendering again and try another burn. Hopefully I had forgotten that step and this will fix it.

Another question. Are you using the sound directly from the video or did you add it separately as an audio track. I've found that making a separate audio file (i.e.mp3) then adding it and locking the audio can stop this. However if you are cutting the video, the audio needs to be cut at the same places to ensure syncing.

The sound is being used directly from the video. I guess I could try and pull the sound from the clips and add them separately, but will muting the original videos and using a separate sound track really stop the lag? If that's the case, it might be worth a try.

It would work, but you should not really need to do that. How long is the video?
Have you defragged? Cleaned out your machine of temp files, etc?

I suggested this because the audio rates are slower with PD8 than a separate audio track, especially when you go to cutting the video. the sound goes with the frame rate if it's directly from the video. But Baryddth brings up a good point of having a cleaned up system. I've just gotten to where I, personally, like to have my audio separate. It's just easier for me to get the quality I like. So is there a way to pull the audio from the video file in PD or do I need to use a different program to do it?

I think I might need to try the separate audio track thing. It sounds like that might be the issue.

Just have to figure out how to get the audio by itself now.

It would be interesting to know the answers to these questions.
Also, if you right-click the clips in the media library, the menu shows "extract audio".
It creates a wav file of the audio of the clip.
Then put the clip in a timeline, and MUTE it.
Put the audio wav file in an audio timeline, and sync 'em up.
Or...
Put the video clip into the timeline, right-click and the menu will show "split audio".
The clip will be muted, and the audio will be placed automatically in an audio timeline below it. This method does not actually create a new wav file.

in response to your questions, the movie is 8 different video clips lined up to equal about 52 minutes of footage. Yes, my computer is set to defrag automatically and it has been doing that. Also, I haven't cleaned out temp files, but I should probably try that.

No, this hasn't happened with any other projects I've been working on.

At 52 minutes, it's rather on the long side.
You could try cutting the project in half, render, then join the 2 new halves. Sometimes long projects lose their sync. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I was afraid you might say that. The problem is, this is only 1 half of the project already.... I hate having more than 2 dvd's for it in the end. If the splitting audio doesn't work, I'll have to resort to that I guess.

No, not 2 DVD's...
Save your project as PART 1.
Save again as PART 2.
Now go back to project PART 1, delete the 2nd half, then render. Save that new file as VIDEO 1. Close
Now open PART 2, delete the 1st half. Render, save file as VIDEO 2. Close.
Combine your 2 new videos in a new project.
What you now have is your entire project, pre-rendered (MPEG2), Burn to disc.
Sounds like a pain, but it's just combining 2 video files to make your movie, and if anything goes wrong, you still have your original project.
