Chapter "Bug"?

I've been using PD365 to create blu ray discs with menus from captured VHS, SD videos and I've come across an apparent problem that I can't seem to fix.

I'm using a custom menu, with simple text for items and titles perfectly aligned (automatic from the custom template and automatic text from the manual chapter markers I've created). My template has the title text (My Video) and 5 standard menu items for the chapters arranged in a vertical list. AS:

MY VIDEO

Item 1
Item 2
Item 3
Item 4
Item 5

It's about as simple as it gets with only some text formatting (fonts, colour, outline).

I'm using the latest version in PD365. I burn to a folder first in PD365 and then use Image burn to burn the actual blu ray.

On the finished, burned blu ray, certain menu items (chapters) are skipped over when stepping forwards through them. My menus are text only and using the down arrow on my blu ray player remote normally jumps down to the next option. e.g. Chapter 1 > down arrow, Chapter 2 > down arrow, Chapter 3 and so on. So, 1>2>3>4>5 etc as you'd expect. On the faulty chapter menu it goes 1>2>4>5, and the selection won't land on 3. If I go back up from 4 I can get to 3 but on one project I can't land on 3 at all. If I play the title and use next chapter I can jump to chapter 3. You can't see this issue in the preview as there's not an exact equivalent to the cursor keys on the blu ray remote (using the mouse you can always select the correct menu item).

I've had this issue on 3 separate projects and been unable to fix.

Any ideas how to fix? Is this a known bug? If so, is it being worked on to fix in an update?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

I don't believe a persistent bug for all, mine works fine. I doubt any fix is being worked, the "Create Disc" module and menus have not had any serious updates in years and many anomalies exist.

Since your selection experience various for chapter 3 from top down or bottom-up selection in one case, I'd make sure you have adequate margin between chapter bounding box stipple areas. PD does check for overlapping, but I've had issue with items simply being too close for proper playback select behavior.

If more space does not work, try two columns with 1 & 2 chapters in one column, 3 & 4 in the other, and center 5 underneath all with reasonable separation and see if that works for you.

Thanks for replying.

I will try spacing them out a little farther in the template. The odd thing is, though, it doesn't happen on all chapter pages even though all are generated from the exact same template I created. I would expect all chapter pages generated from the same template to exhibt the problem.

You're not kidding about the "many anomalies exist"! I've worked my way through many foibles and kinks this software has. Not the least of which is failure to show the right audio file when editing various chapter pages. I begin to wonder if better dvd/blu ray menu creators exist at this price point. I used to use Adobe Encore but that had many issues as well (too fussy about the exact encoding for input video files) and is no longer supported.

Not everything is amenable to streaming. There's still a need for physical media.

There is another possibility for this scenario. Creating the chapter markers not in sequential order like 1,2,3,4 and then placing another chapter in the middle which becomes 3 and chapter 4 then becomes chapter 5. It may preview properly but will exhibit the symptoms you described in the final disc.

You can find any problem by using VLC or PDVD to play the created folder before burning it to a disc, saving you from creating another coaster.
