Audio stereo to mono

I have video that has audio on only the left channel and noise on the right channel. I want to get rid of the right channel completely and have the left channel in the center (equal on left and right). I didn't find any way to independently control the left and right channels of the stereo track.

I tried extracting the audio, and bringing it into Audacity. In Audacity I split the stereo tracks, deleted the right track, and set the remaining track to mono. I then exported from Audacity then added it to my media library and dragged it to a music track.

So far so good. Now I want to make sure that as I edit my project that the video and the audio tracks stay together. Is there any way to lock the music track (which has the audio from the video track) to the video track so they don't get out of sync?

Hi Rick,

You could ensure that that you have the Link All Tracks box checked to ON, in your Preferences.
(Director’s Chair > Edit > Preferences > Editing > Link Tracks)
And then if you use Split to edit your footage, make sure you create your Split in both the Video and Audio track, each time you create a split, or delete unwanted portions.
But you still may run into some sync issues down the timelines.

So I would suggest that you...
- First edit your video (with the noise in one side) to exactly the way you want it.
- Then Produce your edited piece, to a video format who’s audio profile/properties match or exceed the audio quality of your original edited footage.
- Then take this Produced file, and extract the audio.
- Then do to this edited and extracted audio, just what you did in Audacity to get the good audio in the middle, or both channels (mono).
- Then import this corrected and pre-edited audio into an audio track beneath your edited video in the timeline above, and mute the video track.

Since this new audio is the exact audio extracted from your edits, you should just be able to just put it in an audio track, and it should be in correct sync with your video edits above.
Then Produce or Burn this final master edit of your movie to the video format of your choosing.

Just a thought Rick. But others may chime with a better solution.
