i7 920quad core only get 50% used when producing

Hi
Built a high end machine just to support HD video editing. I notice when I monitor the CPU usage it averages about 50% usage. So PD is appears to only use at most 2 of the 4 cores or only 1/2 the thread per core.

Anyone know why?

If I could get PD to use all the cpu resources for producing I could cut the time in half.

Hi There -What OS are you using -32/64?
I guess from your note that you are overclocking your 920 quite considerably - 3.8Ghz is really flying. On my machine the limitation is memory in that PD8 never uses all the memory available.
Is it possible (by running additional applications) to get the system to exercise all the cores. What is PD8 doing when it only uses the 50% of system power - are you in the "produce" phase?
If you are using WIN 7 have you carried out a performance check?
Which MOBO are you using?

If you are using CUDA this purposely uses less of the CPU and more of the GPU (Graphics processing unit) on your graphics card to speed up rendering. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Donald:
I am using windows 7 64 bit.
I am over clocking to 3.8Ghz, pretty easy to do.
I am using a evga mobo x58 sli.

PD8 never gets close to using all the 6gig I have.

When I look at the task manager->preformace all threads ( are
showing activity, but cpu usage still shows less than 50% about 47%.

When I ran a preforamce test to test overclocking stability using LinX all cores get pegged to 100%.
I ran this for > 20min (for stabiltiy check).

CPU core temp rises from 40C to 60C so I am pretty sure the cpu is maxed out.

I would have to run some nero apps I guess to see if there is more cpu left.
In general I can easily run other apps while PD8 is producing.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....cuda is turned on, but I thought that was for preview rendering not produce rendering.
My graphics card is kinda low end GeForce8400.

I could try turning CUDA off and see if rendering speed goes up. Just For Fun

Hi again - I don't use shadow editing at all but I do use the ATI AVIVO rendering engine.

Could you please tell me what voltage settings you are using to overclock your CPU - since I downloaded the latest video driver update I can't get my system to go above 3.17Gh

Thank you,

I believe I am using the default voltage on the cpu.
In the end the only thing I changed from default was the memory timing setting, and maybe upped the memory from 1.45 to 1.6 which I think is the max the memory voltage can be.

Mtrapp:

You may be bottlenecked by the Disk I/O. 10 years of processor improvements have not increased disk throughput that much.

You will need to check with the resource monitor and see what your read and write rates are.

Ways to improve this are to use multiple drives (read from source file on one drive and write the output file to a second physical drive).

Use a RAID array or mulitple RAID arrays and/or SSD drives to increase disk performance.

Move your page file off of your windows native drive to another physical disk.

Lastly, wait several years for PowerDirector to be recompiled for 64-bit platform

Win8 64-bit Pro Retail
Intel i7-4770
16GB DDR3 1600 8-8-8-24
MSI Z87-G45 Motherboard
ASUS GTX 660 Direct CU II OC 2GB GPU
1 TB RAID 1 (mirrored) Drive Array
Several scratch drives for video, TMP, pagefile.

I have 3 HHD in my system.
One for programs, like PD
one that has the media on it and
on for scratch, which I used when I was working with Adobe.
PD wants to use files in the user directory for scratch data, does not seem to be changed.

The HDD a sata drives, I have already moved the page file on to the scratch disk.

Wow, several years. On the web site it says PD is optimized for i7 procesors. Oh well.

Hi,

My experiences don't match yours. During production of my project menu last night (0-21% in the Create Disc process), all 4 cores (8 threads) were fired up with a combined usage of 70% and working with up to 4.5GB of physical memory in use.

PD8 does perform differently on different systems for no obvious reason sometimes so I'm not entirely surprised!

Cheers,

Andrew
