Choppy video on timeline

Can anyone tell me why video on playback on the timeline (movie mod) is choppy when it hits an edit point or an effect. If I pause playback for a second or two and then resume play the video plays smoothly only to get choppy once it hits the next edit point or effect. I use a duo core processor, 6 gigs or ram and a Geforce 9800 GT video card. This happens with editing HD video (mts) from Canon HF s100 camcorder. The video, however, produces fine without issue.

Hi Tony

This does happen with certain types of video files (mine included) but has no affect on the finished project.

You can test this yourself by producing your project (MPEG2 1920x1080) and playing it back on your computer.

Further information relating to graphic cards can be found at:

Thanks. Do you know if there is a way to fix this. Is it the processor, or the video card or both?

Have you ticked the box to use your graphics card to help with processing? It is in the preferences set up. I have the same graphics card as yours with no problems previewing videos smoothly, although I do have a faster processor. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

I suspect it's because the system can't quite keep up with the processing load of "on the fly" rendering of effects or GOP regeneration at edit point.....

I have a quad core running at 2.8 ghz and an 8800GT and do a lot of editig of m2ts from a canon hf100. When I'm producing a file, I notice all 4 cores will easily peg out near 100%...I've run into the same at edit and effect points on "real time" playback in nearly every editing program I've used for HD....even MPEG2 HD let alone the AVC/264 that our Canons are providing. And in this regard, PD seems to do better than a lot of them...

(It's better once the shadow/proxy files are generated....but it still happens...)

If your computer is powerful enough you will get better results with Shadow files turned off. I don't know where the cut off point is for powerful over not powerful enough, but I have seen Dafydd the moderator here suggesting to people to turn shadow files off because their computers are powerful enough to not need them.

I have an intel 920 i7cpu with 3 meg of ram running Vista 32 bit with a Nvidia 9800GT video card and I have the shadow files turned off and do not have any problems previewing even my most complicated videos. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Dafydd recommends turning off Shadow edit file creation when you have sufficient power in your system

OK Robert, my bad.

I don't get it though why I would spend time waiting for Shadow files to be created when my system runs previews etc fine on the raw videos.

Cheers

The choppy video stops and smooths out if I turn off any adjustments made in the Fix/Enhance (particularly the Video Enhance box and Stablizer. Anybody know why that is and what can be done to fix that? In the end, however, when I produce the video all is well regardless of the timeline choppy playback. In the preferences section all boxes to accelerate the processes are checked.

I also do not know what causes Choppiness in the preview window when playing in MOVIE mode. A clip would play well and then the second clip (after a transition) will get jerky. Switiching to CLIP mode seems like solving the choppiness for the clip.

I also tried to check and see if it was the CPU or the card. I downloaded GUI from NVidia web-site and kept an eye on the stats. My video memory usage never goes over 58-60% (I have a 6Gb NVidia 9500GS).
And all four of my processros do not exceed 23% each during playback. I do not believe now this is anything to do with hardwatre. Must be the soft.

Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted... but to weigh and consider.

Yeah, that makes sense. Actually, to smooth out the video, a split second pause and release while on the movie mode smooths it out immediately. So I guess my hardware is fine. Then what you're saying is that PD still has some bugs?

Hi,
Robert's information has been amended, he made a slight error.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/10128.page#44706

I edit 720p and 1080p 30fps. At 1080p 60fps my system is stressing, near the edge of it's capability with a single timeline and one full PiP.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/8445.page Check out the link.

I don't use Shadow edit files.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/9621.page#41702

Edit footage and have a PC which meets the needs of your video expectations. If your system crashes, stalls, hangs and the graphics are dire with stuttering, juddering displays of lower than expected resolution, you are the one at fault - you need to upgrade your computer.
