Windows 7 (64bit) - Repeatable freeze - Must use task manager to exit

Have now reinstalled for PowerDirector for the 3rd time. Thought latest build (250 may fix the stability problems I am seeing but NO luck. In fact, it has made it worse. Running on Windows 7 (64bit) with an Intel I7 processor. I can repeatedly go to 'Help', 'About' and it PD freezes. Then must use the task manager to exit, from then on I can not launch until a reboot. I have followed the directions from the support team, modifed the registry, etc., but still it is very unstable. No problems with any other applications excpt PowerDirector. Anyone else having these types of issues?

Hi Ron -

This has been an ongoing issue. With 2220C, it was discussed here http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/9248.page

I am running Win7 (64-bit) also. The issue is not occurring here, though it was previously. Sorry - I cannot remember whether there was any cause found for the problem before or not.

On my PC, I have disabled the ads by changing the file hosts... but I honestly don't know whether that is connected with the problem. It wouldn't hurt to try it, I guess.

1. Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2. Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3. Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4. Click File -> Open
5. Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6. Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7. Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8. Add host name at bottom of text, beneath 127.0.0.1 localhost - the text to add is 127.0.0.1 liveupdate.cyberlink.com
9. Close Notepad. Save when prompted.

Cheers - Tony

Tony - Thanks for the reply but no luck yet. I modifed the host file as you suggested but all it did was remove the advertisement to purchase the 'add-on' that is shown on the help\about screen. I'll capture and submit the event files as recommended elsewhere and see what happens. This program really worked great on Win XP but I'm really uncertain on Windows 7. Thanks! - Ron

My entire desktop freezes if I drag PD8 to a size smaller than the full window
of my monitor. After about 2 minutes, Windows 7 changes the Aero scheme
to Windows 7 "Basic" and then PowerDirector comes back to life.

Ron & Allen -

All I can say is that I don't think the issues are really to do with how PD functions in Win7. There are many Win7/PD users (including me) who haven't experienced or reported these problems.

Ron - when I suggested the host thing, I really had no idea whether it was related - just a stab in the dark! Sorry it wasn't a very good one.

Allen - in Win7 (64-bit) on my PC, resizing the PD8 window doesn't have any on my desktop background or the visual theme. I can't think how that might be related to PD.

Cheers - Tony

Win 7 kicking out of aero mode is usually a driver issue. Since some of us use PD8 and aero without trouble, I would double check and update your video card drivers first, then any other programs running that could interfere.

The i7 platform is still in its initial generation for Bios and Drivers so there may be quirks you have that no one else does that just may take some time and software updates to iron out. Win8 64-bit Pro Retail
Intel i7-4770
16GB DDR3 1600 8-8-8-24
MSI Z87-G45 Motherboard
ASUS GTX 660 Direct CU II OC 2GB GPU
1 TB RAID 1 (mirrored) Drive Array
Several scratch drives for video, TMP, pagefile.

Fixed! I'm thrilled! Thanks all for your suggestions. Appears it was the video driver and not a PD issue. While using the ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card the installed driver version was 8.632.1.2000. I reinstalled the driver from Dell's web site which actually downgraded the version to 8.630.0.0 with the same freezes experienced. I then went to ATI's web site and installed their 8.690.0.0 version and everything appears to now be working fine. After multiple reboots and prior project launches, I'm pretty confident all is working again. I'm relieved. Special thanks also to Ajay from CyberLink for his very detailed suggestions. I'm very happy again with PoweDirector!

Thanks,
Ron

The ATI drivers are best obtained from the ATI support web pages and are always the latest issue. There have been several updates in the past year from ATI but Dell (I'm a Dell user) is not as quick with them. Win 10, i7
