PowerDVD 11 not working at all

I downloaded the trial version and so far am having no luck at all. When I try to play a Blu-ray (after several minutes of trying to figure out how - the interface is not intuitive) the volume info keeps blinking or the movie info is partially displayed in the top right and the progress bar at the bottom keeps progressing and then snapping back. and the whole screen blinks slightly about once a second. Nothing else happens.

I also tried a DVD, and it played with no sound. An avi video played okay.

The same Blu-ray discs and DVD play fine in PowerDVD 10. I'm using a Dell Zino with an Athlon Neo X2 dual core 6850e 1.8Gz CPU, 4 GB RAM, Win 7 64-bit.

I'm also having zero luck with PowerRemote. I installed the free version on an Archos 70 tablet, started it up, detected the trial PowerDVD 11 on my Zino, selected it, and nothing happens.

Help would be appreciated - I'd like the remote feature in 11, if the product would only work on my system.

It's already patched. And none of those problems look like mine.

I have this issue, too. I have a new retail version of PowerDVD 11 Ultra. I put in a BD (Fantastic Mr Fox). A pop up says "Loading Blue Ray" and then it begins to play. I get an eternal loop of 7 seconds of black screen, and this is called Chapter 1. I can skip to Chapter 2, but this is just 2 seconds of black screen. There is nothing else playable.

The disc is a retail disk and plays fine on my dedicated BD player through the TV.

My computer is a Dell Studio XPS 16 (processor i7 Q820, 8GB ram) with ATI mobility HD4670. I have all the latest drivers and windows patches and I have the PowerDVD patch, too.

DVDs play fine.

I'm annoyed because I bought this product specifically for Blue Ray. I could play DVDs before.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi,

thanks for the DXDIAG - can you please add it as attachement. The attachment option is visible when you press the "postreply" button. Thanks!

please try to find a WHQL VGA driver for your system - the current driver is not WHQL so it can be the root cause for your issue.

OK, Here is DXDiag as attachment.

I have understood from both Dell and ATI that I need to stick to the OEM (ie DELL) bespoke video drivers. I have the latest version of these available from Dell. Not sure what WHQL is...?

This machine came with a Dell bespoke version of PowerDVD for Blu-ray. Presumably Dell supplied it because the computer is able to play bluray?! However, it never worked (same symptoms as I'm now reporting) and so I upgraded to the full retail Ultra version. That doesn't work either.

OK, so I found ATI 8.712 drivers with mobility support for my card here using the rar archive dated 3/25/10. These are reported to be WHQL compliant.

In Device Manager, I try to update the device driver by selecting the folder containing the uncompressed files from this archive. I'm told that the current drivers are the most up to date and these new drivers don't install. I guess the Dell timestamp is more recent even though the drivers are older. I can't see a way to force windows to install the 8.712 drivers.

I tried to uninstall the old drivers first, but this caused the display to disappear from the device manager altogether. Windows started using a standard VGA driver in an 800x600 window and I couldn't change this. After a brief panic, the only thing I could think of was to download the old drivers package again from Dell.

How can I force Windows 7 to use the updated drivers that I have downloaded? Will this then fix my problem?

Thanks,

Tim.

Fixed!

I tried again to delete the Dell drivers in device manager. This time I checked the box to delete the files from this machine as part of the uninstall. The machine then switched to a basic VGA driver again. Then I rebooted. On startup, the Radeon card was installed and Windows found and downloaded new drivers (8.762, Catalyst 10. directly from ATI. Following a second reboot, my Blu-Ray just worked!

I suppose I'm not really happy that its taken so much trouble to get a machine to work that was sold as a Blu-Ray machine. Given the fix, I would say that Dell is at fault here - the drivers they supplied don't work and these are still the drivers they make available on their support pages. Moreover, something about them stops more recent ATI drivers, ones that would work, from installing. Simply deleting them allowed Windows to find the right drivers and fix the problem.

Thanks for your help here!
