Progressive Scan vs. Interlaced

It's my off season for video production and I and trying new things, so I find that I have more questions than answers lately. So... I see people talking about their video is interlaced and they want it to be progressive. How do you know, other than just knowing what type your camera produces? Is there a feature in PD, or a third party program that will tell me which one my video is? I can often tell by taking a screen shot, but there must be an easier way. __________________________________

Hi Jaime,

If you place a clip on the timeline, right click on it and select Set TV Format, PowerDirector scans the clip and tells you what format it is.

It also lets you change the format if you wanted to.

Let me know if this answers some of your questions.
Regards,
David

Thank you. That was it. I looked at all of the properties, but I didn't even think to look at TV format. __________________________________

Hi Jaime,

If you're interested in delving further try these two links as a starter :-

http://searchwarp.com/swa21525.htm
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/video2.htm

This link, as it says, is mainly for avidemux but it does show the complexities involved in the h.264 codec, where the traditional boundaries between interlaced and progressive are blurred, and it shows how complex current editing/rendering software has to be to properly deal with all the variables, particularly things like motion estimation.

They say it's a simple ??? guide - way over my head tho'.

Cheers
