Why is power director 8 worse than 7
[Post New]
why why why is version worse than version 7, ive been trying to compile a 40min dvd for the past 2 days with version 8 and if isnt bs issues with the supposed support for core i7 its the program just instant crashing while producing a mpg2 file to shorten the number of clips the time line needs to create a dvd even though no where in the info does it say tht powerdirector apparently does not like to have alot of hd clips on the time line. i am so tired of this programs inability to complete simple task these short coming need to be stated on the box because i would have never upgraded to this version if i knew this is the kind of result i was going to get.

and who's the genius that decided it would be cool to have a cyberlink advertising new ticker running while the encoding process is running i've even managed to make that little ticker crash. is there any way to remove that useless piece of code ?

As polite as I can be to Cyberlink, I agree that the advertising clip running inside the render window of my PD8 asking me to buy PD8 is annoying and pointless to me. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

there most be like 30% of screen real estate being taken up by that stupid stupid ticker because there is no other way i can word it without really being offensive why could that space have been used for more useful purposes IE. showing detailed progress of the production !

Josh -

I understand your frustration with a product that - in your case - hasn't met your expectations. Agreed about the promo sticker - I'd prefer a black space, which would be less useless. I can't agree that PD8 is "worse than" PD7, though there are obviously issues that haven't been properly addressed. "Worse than" is a pretty big call... unless you just wrote the headline to grab readers' attention!

Have you read what other Core i7 users have written? Robert made some findings... http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/75/7771.page as I'm sure others have.

Cheers - Tony

I don't know whether or not the intellectual status of the Cyberlink employee who initiated the advertising ticker, has been officially measued at genius levels. You would have to contact Cyberlink for confirmation.
But if you simply disconnect from the internet while working with PD8, you will not see that new advertisement ticker.
And you "may" also experience a slight improvement in performance, as the portal to any untimely automatic software updates or communications, will be closed while you are edting, producing or burning.

Carsten,
That was going to be my answer to.

Josh,
If you check your PC's Firewall access status for any program and either set it to block completely or refer, that will help you. In the case of Anti-Virus updates for example you should have that set to manual as it also may interfere with video editing.

Please attach a diagnostic file to your next post and a few other bits - see list and guide below.

I'd also like to know if you have Shadow edit files operating or if like me you have unchecked that option as it was unnecessary for my system?
Open PD
Keyboard, Alt +C > Edit Preferences > General tab > Uncheck "Enable file processing....." > OK

I agree. Its highly unprofessional to have paid for, retail software advertising to you, especially at a time you are dedicating all available resources to crunch a video production.

Over the top IMHO.

Thank you for pointing that out Adrian - and
welcome back!

I can confirm that it works. I don't usually have the confidence to go altering things that are a complete mystery to me... but I did. It works. No more advertisement.

Here's what I did in Windows XP:
1. Locate the file - Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
2. Open "hosts" in Notepad
3. Add host name at bottom of text, beneath 127.0.0.1 localhost - the text to add is 127.0.0.1 liveupdate.cyberlink.com
4. Save file and restart.

Cheers - Tony

I haven't modified the Vista laptop yet but it's essentially the same... copied from http://geekswithblogs.net/thibbard/archive/2006/12/13/ChangingYourHostsFileInVista.aspx

Changing your hosts file in Vista

By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file.

1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

main reason why i make such a bold statement is not to attract attention for people to read my rant, but because i feel that while they added some interesting features and adjustments to the program and some really annoying ones IE. advertising ticker. i am surprised to see that all the really main issues that where clearly apparent in version 7 where not even addressed and while i was happy to see that ati streaming is actually functioning now i am shocked to have found the current workaround to have the program render a movie file when running a core i7 processor. i recently read the pc world review and i am surprised to see the 85 review score and no where in the article did it mention of the constant crashing or the current issues with the i7 processor when rendering. i honestly would love to see this program work because it offers all the functions i would like to make movies without having to go to a professional software like adobe premiere. my main gripe is that currently with all the crashes it makes creating videos such a nightmare and i hate it for that. i just feel that for a software that people are actually paying for there shouldn't be constant threads of various different workarounds just to the power director to work.

I guess I'm just lucky. I don't have the crash problems that you indicate, but I don't use Intel. I really don't see why the 'ticker' has you so upset. It may be silly to sell a program and include an advertising banner, but it's small. Ignore it. If it wasn't there then there would be a big empty spot, which I personally would consider bad design, but that's just my opinion. __________________________________

Josh,
Why no capital letters and why a single paragraph?
Please read my post. It will help you with presentation and provide useful information for others when written in a logical and acceptable manner.

What is the status on this core i7 issue found on this thread ?

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/7909.page

[Post New]
- open power director 8
- converted a 5min 1080p mp4 video to mpg2 format
- clicked on the edit button ...... waited ...... powerdirector stopped responding and crashed

this was a simple operation with no filters, touchups, or pip just simply an HD to SD conversion and the program crashed.

This is what windows reported:

The program PDR8.exe version 8.0.0.2013 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

Josh,
The i7 issue is in the hands of R&D and they have seen your current posts.

If I get 5 minutes I'll try out the 1080p mp4 test you have just described on my set up (not i7).

I have a brand new laptop and this program just keeps crashing on me. I am not a computer wiz but you would think spending 4k on a lap top with all the multi media capability would allow me to run this program with out crashing all the time. I have tried adjusting my anti virus and firewall settings and even deleted any programs that may conflict. What else can I do to get this software to work? I give up and was surprised at how many forum posts out there are having the exact same problem as I.

very disspointed and looking for refund. I am told pinnacle is much better so will give it a try.

i think your write in sum ways but it must feel good to no that there looking at the i7 problem at cyberlink. their are issues for sure but its interesting that pd seems to work diffrently on diffrent systems. True - it shouldnt fail on high end pcs when its advertised the way it is. My specs look woefull beside many others on this forum but I have hardly any problems with it. I hope the i7 issues are resolved soon.

Cheers - Tony

Josh,
While Tony is taking the mickey out of your inept writing style, I tend to be very blunt.

You contribution to this forum is welcome but only if you edit your posts so others can read them! I have had complaints from forum members.

Put capital letters in where needed, add the correct punctuation and use a spell checker.

We all make typo's and errors when posting, your style of writing is unacceptable. It isn't acceptable to your English teacher either!

Please correct your posts or I will take action.

Thank you.
