Animated GIF not working in PD15?

Hi,

I wanted to work with a animated GIF for some video project that I'll be doing but it doesn't seem to 'work' as it should. When I was using PD14 before I upgrade I can play and edit aGIF just fine but now it won't play before or after being added in the Timeline. Did PD remove support for it or is this another bug? I'm not sure if I'll be able to go back to PD14 because I've 'upgraded' my PD14 to 15 and not really bought 15 as a standalone.

I attached the GIF I wanted to use.

Hi Naisu -

It sounds like you must have installed the 2421 beta patch. Animated GIFs work fine with previous patches - 2309, 2026.

With the 2421 beta patch installed, GIFs will not play or display correctly in the timeline.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your reply. Hm, I haven't installed any Beta patches on my PD15 installation. The only update I've installed so far is the official 2309 patch. I tried other Animated GIFs that was working before on my PD14 installation and it can't be played while in the "Media Room" tab. When I try to put a gif on the Timeline, this happens (attached). It looks like it can't play the animed GIF and can't add it on the Timeline as well.

Hi again -

Here, the GIF you attached plays back properly in Media Library & timeline using the 2309 patch. Other GIFs I tested are fine in the Media Library but - in the timeline they display like your screenshot & won't play back.

With the 2421 beta patch installed, no GIFs will play in Media Library or timeline.

The same GIFs play back perfectly in PDR14.

That particular gif is a transparent one among the many available say from the internet. The flickering stars are small black outline of white while the background is transparent.

Hi Tony,

I know that since you've already told me from your earlier reply but since I've only took the patch that was available over here (http://www.cyberlink.com/support/powerdirector-ultra/patches_en_US.html) and haven't used any Beta patches I'm a bit at lost on why my installation doesn't play GIFs and can't add on the Timeline. I'm at 2309 patch the official one and I'm not on any Beta patches. I've made a video as well so you can better see what's happening. Do you have Quicktime installed on your installation? My current installation of PD15 is an upgrade from my previous PD14. I'm a bit at loss here since I'm still trying to pinpoint the cause, it would have been easy if I was on a Beta patch but since I only took the official one I'm looking for other areas on what might have been the problem. The CS in Cyberlink doesn't seem to help much since the CS said "Regarding your concern, I would like to inform you that GIF image is supported in software, but there is a limitation in the software. It will act as a normal image and will not play" which isn't the case since yours seem to be running just fine.

Hi Naisu -

Sorry it's confusing. I'm a bit that way myself!

I did those screen captures on two different PCs. The PC with PDR15.2309 has NO Quicktime installed. The PC with PDR15.2421 does have QT installed because I like to use alpha channel MOV files.

It's a mystery to me why you're getting slightly different results/observations.

As a workaround, in order to (at least) get your animation into the timeline, you can use a program like IrfanView to extract the individual frames:

  1. Extract individual frames of animation, retaining alpha channel if needed

  2. Insert the frames into the timeline

  3. Set the duration of the frames to 00:00:00:01

  4. Copy & paste the set of frames to cover the required duration

I've done step 1 with your Stars GIF & the separate frames are attached in the ZIP.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your replies. I was thinking that maybe QT was the problem since I didn't have it installed but I guess that isn't it. I might try a few small other changes to see which will make it work but if all else fails, I've opted for the Free Cyberlink Cloud thing and have backed up my settings so I would just restore it back since I might do a re-install of the application to see if it fixes things. Do you have Hardware and/or OpenCL enabled by any chance in your PD15 installation?

Just an update on this. I re-installed PD15 without applying the "PowerDirector_2309_GM3_Patch_Patch_VDE160930-01" patch yet. It seems like, it's either the Patch that broke it or my settings since I haven't restored my settings yet. Will update this bit when I'm done testing.

UPDATE 1:

I restored my settings I tested 2 animated GIFs one is the one I wanted and the other one is a non-transparent background GIF. Both plays fine in Media Tab now as opposed to before, I haven't applied the 2309 patch. non-transparent GIF is able to play and put fine in the Timeline but the Glitter GIF has issues when putting in the Timeline.

UPDATE 2:

I applied the patch I mentioned above and it seems like that really broke the Animated GIFs since it wouldn't play at all in the Media Tab and in the Timeline for both different Animated GIF.

UPDATE 3:

Re-installed and just noticed that the settings doesn't go away even if I uninstall so I wasn't really using the default settings. Anyways, will try the latest Beta patch since the 2309 patch is flunking on me might as well try the opposite of it.

I'm having the exact same issue. I can load gifs into a new project with no other files and it works fine. When I try to load gifs into a project that has other files in it, the gifs don't work and sit on the timeline empty. Did you ever figure out a fix for this?

I'm not sure if it'll work for you but what I did was I uninstalled PD15 and reinstalled it and didn't apply any patches after that the GIFs are working on the Media Library and on the Timeline.

After reading this post I went to evaluate and the pdr15 with the last official version 2309, does not work with gif file. From the moment I put a file on the timeline, in addition to not working, I also could not delete it from this tracker.

I did not get information in any location if the pdr15 from this version will no longer accept GIF or if it really is a bug.

PowerDirector Moderator & CL -

Excellent. The hotfix works as advertised!

Dieter -

No version of PDR I've used has been able to import animated GIFs into Title Designer. Just insert the GIF on a separate track.

Sorry for my english.

With the new patch I found a workaround:

import the animated gif into the timeline, then use for the gif the BiB-Designer with function Movement. Save it with OK.
Then use for the gif the function "follow movement" and add the followfunction. Save it with OK.

Now, there a 3. clip in the timeline. Make a doubleclick: now starts the Title Designer. In the Title Designer you will have the animated gif und your text. Save it as a title.

Supplement:
for future use you can save the so created title as a project and import it in your cut. The text is changeable.
