Power Director 13 suddenly doesn't work at "all" while playback & editing

After successfully having used PD 13 for some months editing long concerts with a 4-cam production, the last two days my PD13 seems to have choosen not to work at all. I use Windows 8.1 and I am thinking that I will finish two projects this Fall before I will upgrade to W10.

I did not do any changes in setting or so, I am pretty sure about that.

Problem 1:

I edit in the multicam designer working with four cams/sources. I normally do a rough edit for a song or two before I enter "OK" and go back on the timeline and save". Then i go back into multicam designer and start re-edit with changing cams and adjust lenghts, etc of the clips. This is where the problems occur. Everything seems to work in the designer, but after "OK" and back on the timeline, the program works in a way that it crashes/hang and I can't go on to "save" the project. I haven't experienced this before, well maybe if I did edit many songs, but I don't, I only do small parts at the time.

I tired to change only one camera angle that lasted for 15 seconds and the same things happen.

Problem 2: I found out that when I play back my stuff from the timeline that it does not work smoothly, every time there is a change between those 4 cams (angles) the picture stop/hang for a short moment.

All in all, at the moment I can't work in the program.

I save all files on a hdd, and that worked fine for a 3 hours concert project last time.

Any suggestions, should I try to re-install? I guess there is not much work getting thing up to work again, but I am always worried if I have to start te projects all over again, but as long as I have the project file and all other stuff it should work.

Roar

I uninstalled PD13.
Then installed it. I did not uinstall the premium content, etc.
Should it be necessary?

After opening the program after the installation everything was exact as I left it for setting/properties. Hmm?

The same problems occured when playing back on the timeline, even when lowering to standard quality.

Some seroius frustrating problems right now(!) Windows 10 Home • Power Director 16 Ultimate

It sounds like something may have broken somewhere down inside Windows. Since you've already done the un/re-install path, please run the DxDiag test and post the results. Details are in the "Welcome" sticky at the top of the forum index.

The premium content isn't an issue, but QuickTime and SmartSound could be. Did you un/re-install both of those along with PD? If so, can you double check to see that you have the latest version of QT *( 7.7.8 )*

For Problem 1, can you save the project immediately after exiting the MCD, without doing ANYTHING to the timeline?

Problem 2 is almost certainly related to this issue. Even though there are things we could try here, I think we should focus on #1 until we know what's going on there.

James, that's a very common problem when there are more edits/FX/fixes/speed or rotation changes going on than PD can process in real-time. Some seemingly simple changes, like rotating or flipping a clip can slow PD to a crawl. Please see this *thread* for more details.

In the mean time, I'd like to fiocus on the serious issue (Problem #1) that Roar is having so after exiting the MCD so we can get him up and running ASAP.

Optodata, thanks again for caring about my PD problems.I really appreciate your effort and time. In June you were a lot of help to me when I started out.

First an update. I have installed Windows 10 now. I have also installed those two latest patches and now running version "13.0.3130.0"

Problem 1:
I always go directly to save after exiting MCD. Usually it takes a couple of seconds or maybe a little bit longer agfter editing for some minutes in MCD - back on the timeline - before I can "save". In my case earlier today, and yesterday after exiting MCD it did not take only seconds, it took forever, and I did not wait for it. I clicked on the computer mouse and was given the options to wait or shut down. So it can't take any changes.

Problem 2: Even a 40 seconds two cam mix I did now, it failed when palying back on the timeline, even with low quality preview every scene has a small stop/hang in picture. So this is bad.

Attached is DxDiag from the shutdown/closing of PD13 earlier today.

I did not install SmartSOund. I do have QUickTime 7.7.7 and triesd to update, but no success right now.

I did a new test for editing right now in the MCD, and well back on the timeline it handled a small changes and I could save.
But it took a long time on the timeline before I could save it. The play back still sucks.

Hi Roar

I have to run but I wanted to give you a quick answer.

There seems to be a problem with a game controller driver on your system, and you can see "HID\VID_046D&PID_C52B&REV_1201&MI_01&Col03" comes up many times at the end of your DxDiag results in the "Problemsignatur:" section. I'd suggest running SFC /scannow as an Admin (search the forum for my posts with those keywords if needed) and see if that helps.

It's also possible that the error is related to your Logitech nano or Bluetooth receiver, and you could try uninstalling and reinstalling that.

Otherwise your system seems to be up to date, and I'll try to take a closer look at your post and test results tomorrow.

"HID\VID_046D&PID_C52B&REV_1201&MI_01&Col03" seems to be my external wireless keyboard, yes. I checked for the latest driver and it should be updated. I am running a complete scan on my computer now with, eh, yes that first and then I will do SFC /scannow. I tried SFC /scannow, but it won't start as the McAfee is running.

PD seems to be running so slow.. I will try it after the SFC /scannow, but maybe I will have to wait for tomorrow as is it getting night here. I wasn't able to do SFC /scannow, and I am the admin on my own computer. PD 13 not working good, takes a lot of time to load a project with all it scenes to the timeline, and the rest of it works like yesterday.

I am trying to un-install my QuickTime 7.7.7, even if I don't understand how this program could effect my PD13. It was just a thought from you Optodata, that I should upgrade to 7.7.8 but my PC won't. When un-installing I got this message as it will not un-install either(!)

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error during installation of this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2229"

I googled this and see that a lot op people have problems un-install og install 7.7.8 on Windows 10.

Are you actually running on Windows 10 now. Installing OT 7.78 actually solved the problem for one user. See this post: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/45231.page . See this link on how others install QT 7,78: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/how-to-install-quicktime-on-a-pc-with-windows-10/95f13c0a-b593-4022-ba27-1cd18b255a9b?auth=1 .

I beleive that updateing QT would uninstal the previous version of QT. You can try running the QT installer with Run as Administrator to see if it works. It seem that your problems are deeper than this. you can try right mouse clicking on the PD13 icon and choose Run as Administrator to see if that solves the problem for now. If it does help then you have a corrupt users account and need to create a new one with administrator priveleges.

It looks like optodata got you headed in the right direction. Let us know if any of this helps.

Hi Roar

PD actually needs QT to operate correctly, and that's why I wanted you to try to update it. If you're not able to install it, maybe it's damaged in a way that affects PD.

Here are two ideas: uninstall PD and let it try to uninstall QT. Check Programs and Features afterwards to see if it's actually gone, If it is, try installing the new version as an Administrator. When you reinstall PD, you should see a message that a newer version of QT is already installed, and everything should be OK.

If uninstalling PD doesn't remove QT, download and install *Revo Uninstaller Pro* (it's fully functional for a 30 day trial). Run it, click on QT7 and then click on the Uninstall icon. Try to use the Remove option in QT's installer, and after you get the error click on Advanced in Revo's scanning modes section and click Scan. In the "Found leftover Registry items" window, check the top-most bold box on each tree level, like this:

When you have all the bold items checked, click on Delete (not Next) and confirm. When it finishes, please reboot and then QT should be completely gone

Please do both of these steps (if uninstalling PD doesn't work by itself) because it's better to have PD uninstalled when you remove QT. When you reinstall PD, let it install QT and then you can manually update it afterwards. Also, you only need to install the "essential" files for PD to run correctly, and you can choose to not install all the other options if you don't want or need them when you update it to 7.7.8.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

EDIT: We were posting at the same time. Thanks for the extra info, tomasc!

Thank you so much both of you for what to try out.
I am not gonna explain this in a good way so I keep it short. Since I bought my computer 6 months ago, nearly from day 1 I have had trouble using links on the Internet and open new pages. Aslo have problems using upgrade links from programs, many times it says, check your Internet connection, couldn't find the page, etc. I have discussed this many time with my brother who understand this much better than I do. I have now concluded that I need to fix this first and will reset my computer, "remove everything" then I have to re-install programs after that. If this doesn't help the connection/Internet thing I will have to dleiver my computer in for service. Therefore I will not be able to follow the leads you gave me now. I tried, but my computer couldn't reach the server/net for upgrading QT and fails to open *Revo Uninstaller Pro*. Enough is enough. I'll be back! Will let you know! Thanks again, Roar

When you purchased that laptop, there was many choices for antivirus and firewalls. Selecting one that you are not familiar with can cause some of the problems you indicated like having to hold down the ctrl key first before clicking on a link that others would have no such problem. Windows firewall would have no problem but not allowing an app go through an installed firewall can mean permanent blocking for that app. In the past, I have seen where a browser is unable to access the Yahoo apps because a paranoid user choose to accept no cookies because he was warned by his kids about viruses. I can't do anything to help everyone. Resetting the browser is an easy fix. Having a commercial firewall previously block an app and there is no fix that I know of. It depends on each users sense of security in some cases.

Hope your putting that pc back in the original condition and selecting the right choices solve your problem.

An update regarding trouble with PD13:

  1. I did a re-install/"erase-everything" on my computer, and I am running Windows 10 permanently now.

  2. First I installed McAfee virus protection and so, because I have a lincence for that one.

  3. I installed PD 13 With QuickTime - actually version 7.7.4

  4. Tried PD13 and still same kind of problems, hmm...

  5. Opened Qt from desktop and tried to upgrade - didn't succeed. Still the same issue about check your Internet connection or firewall.

  6. I un-installed McAfee

  7. Opened QT again and succeeded to upgrade, but it ended up with version 7.7.6

  8. Opened PD13 - and..

  9. everything worked smoothly again!

  10. Guess McAfee has "f^cked" up some things for me.

  11. Right now I am running without Antivirus protection and staying offline, only go onlie if I need it on this computer

  12. Will finish one of my projects now, and then deliver in the computer for a real check, still problems on the Internet stuff even without McAfee, but I will give it some days and try more on the Net rgearding what works, and what doesn't works.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Roar

It sounds like McAfee could be renamed FcAmee for all the grief it caused you! yell At least you're finally up and running with a perfectly clean installation of Win10.

As tomasc said, there are many choices in AV programs (I use the paid version of AVG but there's a free version as well) and it sounds like you should either try some out - only one at a time, of course - or configure McAfee so that it works properly. I'm sure there are support options for helping you do that, including a live remote session where their support person can remotely make all the appropriate changes.

A couple other thoughts: Even with a brand new installation I've had some problems with SFC /scannow showing problems, and here's an excellent *source* for making sense of the huge CBS.log file by narrowing it down to just the problems it couldn't fix

If you're still having download issues, I think it would be helpful to see if you can access the internet normally through the same router with another device. That way you can isolate (or rule out) connection problems that might be related to the router/modem/ISP.

Finally, QT is at 7.7.8 and hopefully you'll be able to successfully download and install that soon. You've worked hard to get to this point and I'd like to see you back in the editor's chair ASAP cool

The McAfee secuity software is great protection. Sounds like you might have turned off it's information messages so you didn't know what was happening. I had the version on a pc without the virus vault common with AV 6 years ago where I could simply restore any files it deleted as viruses. I contacted tech support first, then posted in the forums when I got no answer. See this link: https://community.mcafee.com/thread/6834?tstart=0 . On the second page of 33 threads you see that Cyberlink PowerDVD users had the same problems. The problem exist for 4 months for other users of the same software because they didn't contact tech support.

Had 3 major incidents in 2 years with McAfee. The last one is when Logitech webcam software can't be installed so I contacted McAfee Tech support again and requested a remote session. The technician was frustrated after an hour and put a program on my pc to remove all traces of McAfee, told me to use it, install my software, and reinstall McAfee. After he logged off, I did all that except that I did not reinstall McAfee. I choose a different antivirus to install and the webcam function properly.

My experience is that other AV will also delete files that stops older installed games from running. You simply fill out a form to the AV manufacturer that the game is many years old and you beleive it is a false positive. They check out the information you supplied and fix it in the next dat update and you can then restore the particular deleted file in the virus vault and be on your way.

By the way, McAfee AV is factory supplied by HP which also supply PD12 on their premium pc's. I tested one for a different PD post. It works great.

If you don't want to contact McAfee tech support about this or put up with it then maybe a different AV as suggested by optodata is a good way to go. Good luck on whatever you choose to do...

Thanks so much both to Optodata and tomasc for the feedback and the knowledge you share here. yes, FcAmee is the new name. I will use my computer for some days testing out the Internet/Connection stuff. Also see if I can update to QT 7.7.8 from the QT Application. I don't have any problems with my old computer og iPads, etc, all using the same router, so I have concluded it is my new computer. I will go for another AV when I am ready to install that. Right now I am finishing of one of my concert projects.

This is a 3-min trailer of a local guy from my town doing an Elvis tribute show! You can like it or not :
https://youtu.be/P4P9j8OtO2g

Filmed with 3 identical cameras - Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V. That "old" model from 2012 is still a very good point and shoot for filming at shows.

Thanks!
Roar

Roar, I thought your trailer was great! I liked the flow from camera to camera, and I even found that the couple of times that the main camera went out of focus just added to the "live" feel.

Very well done! cool

Thanks for the thumb up! :

The most important thing is that the impersonator himself is lucky with the video result and the BD that came out of his show. I am having a small break now from video editing after my "Elvis" BD project, but will soon carry on with another concert that was filmed/recorded at the same event as "Elvis".
